One of the dumbest things out there is the "world series" of poker, and on ESPN of all networks.
Goes right along with "competitive eating"

Sport is all forms of competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Well it has an entertainment part, but what about the physical part?

I think it would fall along the same category as chess, although I do love poker!

Poker I don't consider a sport. The same thing I feel about chess because of the reasons mentioned in this response.

Although Chess is considered a sport in the SE Asia games that are played each year, I just can't see poker being called a sport in the USA. Some might call it a past-time or a vocation, but it's just not a sport in my book.

Again, we are offered a poor selection of answers and this one does not accurately express my opinion. I don't consider Poker to be a sport, but in the context of what is considered sport these days I guess it would qualify. At least it is something where the outcome is not determined by judges

But, I think they will start calling it a sport if, they haven't already. Unfortunately the word sports is practically gone from the sports and entertainment industry today. The key word for the CEO's that no f%*k all about sports; entertainment, marketing and merchandise.

I looked up the word "sport," here's what I got:

    1. An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

    2. A particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.

Now does this honestly sound like poker? Heck no! That game is played indoors and the most movement you do is hold your cards and sit in a chair.

In my opinion sports are played by athletes. There are alot of "activities" that want to be considered a sport and their participants want to be considered athletes and they just aren't in either case. There are some other activities that you see reported on ESPN that fall into that same category for me, but I won't name them because I know I'd hit a nerve for many on here.
