no although sometimes its unfortunate that some bands change their style and music as soon as they become famous.

What's the point if you stop liking a band once they become popular, did you really like them in the first place then?

If they start to sound bad, I listen to their older songs, if they keep being awesome, why would I stop liking them?

Though it may be true that I don't listen to mainstream, and most of my music, has never been heard by a lot of people. If I like it, I like it for the sound, not what others think of it.

but then again, I don't pay attention to what's on the radio or is popular at any given time. I like a band because of the music and their music would be the only way I'd stop liking them.

Quite the opposite. I usually do not start liking a band until after it stops being popular.

That happened with the band, CreoleStank in the 70's and Meat Pocket in the 80's. I stopped going to hear them when they got popular at the VFW.

As long as the band's ego stays the same, of course a band's music should grow. I think bands stop being respected sometimes because of their fans. Take a poppy mainstream band such as One Direction, I don't like their music either, but I think most of my disrespect for them comes from the screaming girls that don't stop ranting about them.

However, when an obscure band suddenly becomes popular, it's usually because they've sold out and changed their sound. That's why I'd stop liking the band, not just because they've become popular.

Once they start messing with their style BECAUSE they're popular, that's when I bail. There's a difference between experimentation and just outright changing your whole style. I'm not a fan at all, nor have I ever been, but Metallica is an easy example.
