Do you remember when the Olympics was about sports?

Rogue_Loner 2012/08/05 07:51:22
Yes, I remember. ABC had great coverage and competent sportscasters.
You're crazy, RL. I'm more interested in who's hot.
You!

Believe it or not, there was a time when the Olympics focused on sports rather than who was cute, hot, sexy, the athletes pre teenage love life, or who was sleeping with who. Come to think of it , it was before NBC got hold of the coverage.
In fact, this poll does not even belong under category sports.

I remember those days. I even remember watching the Jamaican Bobsled team carry their broken sled over the finish line!

REALLY? No, if I thought it was never about sports, then I would think they would've named it more appropriately; Sweaty Drama Baggage, for example.

Yes, I remember. If personal info was reported it was about the atheletes' family and how they trained. I enjoyed them so much better when ABC covered them.

To be honest, I never noticed any of the things you mentioned being the focus. Maybe politics were something else, but to me it still is about the sports.

This is part of the reason that I care more about the sports that don't get a lot of air time. Sure, I enjoy swimming, and gymnastics, but you better believe that I DVR them all to fast forward through all the talking. I once stopped watching an interesting equestrian jumping series because the woman that was commentating wouldn't stop bitching about how one guys tie came loose when he was almost unhorsed, or how many more points this other chick would get if she only thought to wear a hair net over her "sloppy" pony tail.

The fault is not with the Olympics it is with NBC's terrible coverage.

I remember when it was strictly about the sport and the competition, it was dry and boring and I did not watch. To know about them individually as humans who have worked hard, have achieved and failed makes it more interesting about our athletes and other countries athletes.

One of us has a bad memory. I hated ABC's coverage of the Olympics for many of the same reasons I hate NBC's coverage. Too much flag-waving, too much tear-jerking, emotional crap, and too much entertainment and not news reporting.
The Olympics are a news item and should be televised live, like the Super Bowl or Presidential elections. None of this crap "Coming up, the showdown in the 100m", about some race that happened 8 hours previously and still gets delayed another 2 hours, with continual hyping, before finally showing.

I remember the live coverage and getting up at 3AM to watch my favorites. I don't watch so much anymore because they are delayed and shown for advertising $$ rather than the sport itself.

In this era of immorality and reality shows, I'm not surprised how much energy is wasted on who's the most sexually appealing or who banged who.
