It actually all depends. Like i'm not going to go out and spend 15 dollars for a cd if I only one song. HOWEVER if I really like the artist and most of the songs on the cd then I'll go and buy the cd.

Because I want to listen to it, because I feel like it. I enjoy their music, want to find new music, music is extremely important to me, but I have other things higher on the priority list that my money will go to. Simple as that.

If it's over 20 years old and/or the artist is dead, I can justify it in my mind as not stealing.

I should have voted "I think...."
Because as an artist, I know you can't make money off of album sales.
You know what does make you money? Merch and shows.
If you give people your album for free, word of mouth spreads, more people go to your shows, more people buy merch.
Now, my band always gave out free stuff. This got us a small following before we broke up.
We can get technical about the stealing bit (and it isn't) but that's not my argument.
I pirate music because if I were to buy all of my music, I would seriously have millions in debt. You shouldn't feel bad about it either.

You can make mone from sales if you're independent. That's what I do.

I always bought CDs or off Itunes, out of respect for the bands. But I'm NEVER buying from Itunes again, I transfered songs from one computer to the other, I lost 50 songs.

Artists don't make hardly any money from their work, especially electronic dance music artists, like myself. What piracy does (file sharing) is it gives other artists, DJs, and listeners a chance to hear what an artist is doing. Artists make their real money from playing live shows and selling merchandise. Where an artist might make a buck, the record label they are signed with makes 10. The only thing a label does for an artist is get the artist publicity and sell their work across multiple online stores. Also, I would LOVE it for people to steal my stuff. I've thought about uploading my music to The Pirate bay just to get more people out there mixing my music. I was talking to an old man yesterday who thinks that music's downfall is because of napster and that musicians aren't being paid for all their work because people are stealing music online. This is so far from the truth. The very small amount of people who DL off the internet barely puts a scratch on music sales.

Your math is a little off. Of a 99 cent purchase on itunes, the band gets $.10, Itunes gets $.35 and the label gets $.55. If the artist owns their own label, they get $.65.

Thanks for the info. I've often wondered how much the artists get from such a cheap price as 99 cents. Even given Ben's explanation, I still can't understand why any artist would want someone to steal his music.

It's illegal and hurts the artist by depriving him or her of rightful gains from their talent. If you enjoy an artist, it makes sense to support that person, not steal from him or her.
