Do You Feel Bad for the Seattle SuperSonics Fans?

It was just four years ago that pro-basketball was abruptly gone from Seattle, Washington. Over 40 years of Seattle SuperSonics history became just that: history. The franchise, which had struggled professionally and financially, was sold to Clay Bennett and moved to Oklahoma City to be the Thunder -- despite Seattle's fans pleas to 'save our Sonics.' In fact, there was even a documentary made about the controversy called SonicsGate you all should Google.

Now the Sonics' records aren't complete history, but they're now owned by the Thunder. What makes 'SonicsGate' more bittersweet by the year for Seattle sports fans is that NBA Commissioner David Stern assured them their team would be intact and/or that basketball would stay in the city. It's 2012 and that doesn't look to be happening anytime soon. On top of that, the team's 2007 first round NBA Draft pick Kevin Durant has emerged as a top 10 NBA player.

In the last two seasons, the Thunder not only became the NBA's most improved team, but made two straight Western Conference Finals appearances -- en route to the first NBA Finals appearance by the team this year since moving to OKC. The Sonics' all-time great player Gary Payton did a recent radio interview and had a message for Seattle's still broken-hearted fans, who are still reeling from losing their team: move on and let's try to bring the NBA back to Seattle. One can only hope. Do you feel for Seattle SuperSonics fans?

Maybe you would if you lived in Seattle and missed your home team, and the games you could go watch at the stadium. And plus how good the Thunder are, it's just not the same.

I feel bad for the the real fans. The real fans who stayed dedicated to the team right to the end. If OKC wins (which I'm hoping for), another same situation might happen with the NHL. In the 95-96 season The Quebec Nordiques moved to Colorado to be the Avalanche that same season. After the big trade for Patrick Roy to the Avalanche, and Jocelyn Thibault to go play for Montreal Canadiens, that same year Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup final sweeping the Florida Panthers. This definitely left the city of Quebec bitter on the inside.

They didn't support the Sonics when they were in Seattle. Now they want another team. I live in Oregon with the Trailblazers and they play to a full house. It was pointed out to me that pro teams flourish in cities where they are the only pro team. This is true in Oklahoma City as well as Portland. Portland, however, now has a pro soccer team that is well supported, also.

I don't care for basketball and the Sonics were not the best team in the world, but my heart does go out to those grieving fans.

But hey, at least we have a pretty kick ass soccer team though! And The Storms are pretty good, at least with what I've heard.

My Brothers family is in Seattle and between that and business I've visited many times. It's a great town but overall not big. It just always seemed to me that the Sonics just kinda slipped thru that cracks of so much else there to do.

Seattle is a great town for Football and they love their Seahawks & the rivalry between the Dawgs & Cougs is hotly debated all the time! They are dedicated Mariner fans as well!

With all that and boating/Hiking/hunting and Horseback riding aplenty it just seems more than enough.

Not even a little bit. Seattle was told what they needed to do to keep the team. They didn't want to keep them all that bad apparently. That's in fact why they were put up for sale in the first place. Bennett even entertained the idea of keeping them in Seattle but it was very quickly shown Seattle didn't really care. As a former resident of Seattle and Tacoma, I'm ashamed of you all. As an Oklahoman now, I'm happy that you didn't care. And don't forget New Orleans, the Hornets won while they were here, and sold out every home game.

I used to work at First National Center. I hated EVERY event that was held at the Ford Center, as it was known then. I got off at 5 and it was always all screwed up. I think with a State of just 3 million residents to put as many fans in the seats as the Lakers, who have a base of at least 10 million to draw from, it should show the world what a great market for professional sports OKC really is. The Hornets in NO could barely draw 3 fans, and sold out from their first game in OKC. I don't think we could support an MLB team, But I do think we could support an NFL team as well as the Thunder. Hope they pick it back up for game 3 :(

I'm praying for that. I would like to see a few more baskets in the first quarter. That's all it would have taken in the second game. And yes we Oklahoman's are avid football fans. We live and breathe with each OU or OSU game. Of course if we did get an NFL team I don't know if I could switch my loyalties from the Cowboys, I've been a fan of theirs for too long.

Yeah, I can understand their pain, there's even talk of the Rams moving back to LA if the city doesn't build them a New Stadium

The way they have been playing, most of us St. Louisans probably would be glad to see the Rams go. Having the Cards is enough for me. Go Cards!

My memory is there were several votes and opportunities for Seattle to keep the Sonics in their city, but they didn't do what was necessary to keep the team.

I AM a Supersonics fan. We don't need anyone to feel bad for us. It does sting a little to see OKC in the finals, but Kevin Durant and Nick Collison were Sonics and so I root for those two players to do well. The rest of the team, along with Clay Bennett and David Stern can all bite me.
