Do You Feel Bad for the Seattle SuperSonics Fans?

It was just four years ago that pro-basketball was abruptly gone from Seattle, Washington. Over 40 years of Seattle SuperSonics history became just that: history. The franchise, which had struggled professionally and financially, was sold to Clay Bennett and moved to Oklahoma City to be the Thunder -- despite Seattle's fans pleas to 'save our Sonics.' In fact, there was even a documentary made about the controversy called SonicsGate you all should Google.

Now the Sonics' records aren't complete history, but they're now owned by the Thunder. What makes 'SonicsGate' more bittersweet by the year for Seattle sports fans is that NBA Commissioner David Stern assured them their team would be intact and/or that basketball would stay in the city. It's 2012 and that doesn't look to be happening anytime soon. On top of that, the team's 2007 first round NBA Draft pick Kevin Durant has emerged as a top 10 NBA player.

In the last two seasons, the Thunder not only became the NBA's most improved team, but made two straight Western Conference Finals appearances -- en route to the first NBA Finals appearance by the team this year since moving to OKC. The Sonics' all-time great player Gary Payton did a recent radio interview and had a message for Seattle's still broken-hearted fans, who are still reeling from losing their team: move on and let's try to bring the NBA back to Seattle. One can only hope. Do you feel for Seattle SuperSonics fans?

A group of overpaid men stopped sucking cash out of your wallets, and are now sucking someone else dry.
    Be grateful.
Eventually the delusion that professional sports matters in your life will fade and reason will set in.

As a fan of the Sonics, I have to say that I was sad to see the team leave. I had no say in it, seeing as how I live about 8 timezones away from the city, but I still thought it was sad. I'm really pleased that the team is doing well in Oklahoma, though. It's great to see them rising to the top like they did back in the day when they played the Chicago Bulls for the championship (they lost, but the point remains; they did great). I'm rooting for them in the against the Miami Heat. It would be great to see them triumph over a long established team with years of experience under their belt.
I think Payton is right, though. It is time to get over the loss of the Sonics and try to bring the game back to the city. You don't get anywhere by just remembering past glories and wallowing in the misery of not having it anymore.
The city has teams in quite a few leagues; The Seattle Mariners (MLB), The Seattle Seahaws (NFL), The Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL), The Seattle Storm (WNBA), The Seattle Mist (LFL), The Washington Huskies (NCAA)... The list goes on and on. Sports is alive and well in Seattle. So who says they won't ever have another NBA team?

The fans in Seattle didn't want to help contribute to the building of a new facility to replace the Key Arena and so the team had to move on and go somewhere else. There's nothing for Seattle fans to whine about. They let the Sonics go.

Why should we have given them money to build a new stadium when they had one that was perfectly fine. And the league can fund it themselves and stop asking us for handouts. I dont care that they left and I hope they dont come back. I dont need another reason for mindless, braindead sportsfans to ignore reality and watch grown men throw balls around.

The Key Arena was a rather old arena, and oh, it didn't have luxury seats, either. The NBA is not in the business of funding the construction of a new arena. That is up to the franchise (the franchise being the Supersonics) themselves to come up with the funding. Believe it or not, many businesses that surrounded the Key Arena relied on having the Supersonics around to keep their businesses running afloat. When the franchise left for OKC, I am pretty sure a good number of them went out of business. You might [edit: not] care about that and that is sad. Nothing good can come for the local economy when a major franchise like the Supersonics leave a market like Seattle for a smaller market like Oklahoma City. In fact, it's pathetic.

Up until Seattle gets another team they can be OKC fans and still cheer on Kevin Durant because it's not his fault the team moved.

You never fall in love with a sport franchise unless it's like the StL Cardinals or Yankees, Red Sox, Celtics more institutions than sports teams, all can be moved when the money is on the table ask Baltimore Colts and stadium/arena money is involved greed has no permanent area code.

The die-hard fans are the ones I feel sorry for. As a MN North Stars fan, I share in your disappointment. We got another hockey team (The Wild), and it just isn't the same.

And though I am not old enough to even know the Minneapolis Lakers, as a basketball fan, how do you think I feel about the Los Angeles Lakers??? Don't even get me started!

I was a Charlotte Hornets fan so I know how it feels to lose your hometown team. The Bobcats suck and they'll never live up. Michael Jordan needs to get the name back.

those who weren't in Washington don't understand what kind of double talk was taking place.
If we were told from the get go what the true intentions were, things might be different.
Personally I was never into the Sonics, but i don't like people when they say one thing and ask for our trust only to do another.

true but I wish the NCAA was more fair. Like when a school gets a punishment, the coach should also get a punishment. Because currently they're just getting fired or resigning and go get another job...

One NCAA Basketball coach has gotten 3 schools in trouble... he gets fired... but because he keeps winning (partly because he's a very good coach and partly because he cheats) he keeps getting a new coaching job with no punishment other than he has to move.

Say if Pete Carroll wanted to get out of the NFL and go back to NCAA... he would have no punishment for the USC getting in trouble even though it all happened under his watch. Some other coach had to pay the price for him.

I'm sure Cleveland Browns fans felt the same way when the Browns owner moved their 50-year old team to Baltimore and then won a Super Bowl just a few years later (something the Browns have never done). Or the Quebec Nordiques fans when the owner moved their team to Colorado and won the Stanley Cup the very next year (something the Nordiques had never done).

Let me ask you this. Are Seattle residents now ready to build a new arena? Are Seattle residents now ready to fill the stands regardless of how their team is doing?
You have to remember, those are the reasons they were sold, then moved. They are the Thunder now, of OKC. Life's tough...get a helmet.
