This year, six of the nine films nominated for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards were based on books: "Hugo," “War Horse,” “Moneyball,” “The Descendants,” “The Help,” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.”

Last year, half of the “Best Picture” nominees were adapted from books: “The King’s Speech,” “True Grit,” “The Social Network,” “Winter’s Bone,” and “127 Hours.”

A number of other book-to-movie adaptations picked up nominations at 2012’s 84th Annual Academy Awards. They included: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," "Albert Nobbs," "My Week With Marilyn," "The Adventures of Tintin," "Drive," and "Jane Eyre.”

Some people love this trend, but others are adamant that movie adaptations are “never as good as the book.”

What about you SodaHeads? Do you enjoy seeing your favorite books turned into movies?

It's cool to see what they come up with, though I think most books have enough content in them that they'd make better TV series or series of movies than just single movies.

It depends. If you watch it and its god awful then its a let down. But the hunger games and the held adaptions were well made.

The Help and the original swedish versions of the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo were good. I just make sure not to try to compare the movie to the book because they can never do it justice :)

I do enjoy it, but they never usually turn out to be as good as the book (ahem, I'm looking at you Eragon. I will never recover from that monstrosity. It didn't even have the same stroyline or characters. I'm suprised they could even call it Eragon -_-).

It completely depends on weather or not they make it a good translation.

I guess it just depends. Harry Potter for example was a fantastic book series and a good movie series. Same with The girl with The Dragon Tattoo.

There should have been a "sometimes" option. If done right, and they stay as true to the book as possible, these movies could be amazing. If they don't, I dislike them. I loved the LOTR books and the movie adaptations were brilliant! I also loved Tuck Everlasting, though there were some MAJOR changes between the book and the movie. Same thing occurred with Freak the Mighty. Harry Potter is iffy, but I was able to enjoy the movies more when I stopped picking out the differences between the books and the movies. The same with A Series of Unfortunate Events. I absolutely hated the adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, though. It was all wrong!! I also disliked the Golden Compass movie. The book in this case was way better.

Usually, in my opinion, anyway, they fall far short of the original book on which they are based. For example, all the films that have ever been based on Charles Dickens novels don't hold a candle to the authors original writongs..

books use imagination, movies use visual effects; therefore the books have to be changed to make a movie. If I love a book, Why would I want it changed?

If done correctly. There are many adaptations out there that are really good, like the Harry Potter franchise (all except for Prisoner of Azkaban, which completely screwed up the timeline of events), but then there are others, like Blood and Chocolate, that take the bare basics of the book and then completely switch things around until it is unrecognizable. So it really all depends on the way it is done.

I forgot about that one! It didn't bother me quite as much as Prisoner of Azkaban did though. I think that's because the PoA was my favorite book at the time and then they just totally screwed it up. But thanks for reminding me about OotP!

If I've read the book, I don't want to see the movie (for good reason), and if I haven't read the book and saw the movie, I'm told the book was better. In reality, people need to become more creative and come up with their own ideas. It's always easy to take a really good story from a book and use it as your own. And really, if you want your shtick to be ripping books off, go for it. But I'd assume coming up with your own idea(s) would be a lot more gratifying.

    Actually, yes and no.
If I like the book, I will definitely go.
    But I'm almost always disappointed.
They tend to cut way too much of the story or even, on occasion, change it in a fundamental way.

eh, yes & no...I'm usually disappointed in the screen adaptation...My boss bugged me into reading "The Hunger Games"...She thinks it's such a great book so I thought I'd read it to humor her.. I act excited about it but am really not...I'm about halfway through the book and it's okay, not really the kind of reading I like but I'll be interested to see how the movie turns out. The movie has to be better than the book, can't be much worse...

They had a bad actor for the main character, they tried to cram the first three books into one, and they changed SO many things that it just pissed me off! In the Harry Potter ones, all they really did was cut out some details and changed only a couple of things. A book is basically a script already written, you just have to cut out some things, and change very little. In the Cirque Du Freak, they basically changed the WHOLE course of the story. I hope they let some one else try to make a movie of the Cirque, preferable with more people who did the Harry Potter movies.

I mean, I’m not against it. It’s just that there’s so much more depth and development of characters that often can’t be portrayed in the films. Which is fine and I understand why, but I always leave those kind of movies feeling that I’m missing something.
