Do You Believe in Sportsmanship?

All too often in sports, there have been cases of athletes having attitude issues and being sore losers. A few years ago, when on the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James left the basketball court following a loss, out of sight, out of mind, and without shaking anyone's hand. Metta World Peace aka Ron Artest made a big mistake elbowing James Harden's head into another universe, only to not apologize at all. Football's most fearsome defensive player James Harrison often shows no remorse on his opponents.

But don't tell that to young Ohio track and field athletes Meghan Vogel of West Liberty Salem and Arden McMath of Arlington. They've made national headlines for sportsmanship at its finest. McMath and Vogel raced each other on the track. McMath had about 50 meters to go, a bad mishap occurred. Her knee buckled, which in almost any case, would have doomed her chances of winning.

Vogel could have kept running, but she saw what happened to McMath -- and ran to her aide. To the amazement of the crowd, Vogel helped McMath up and willed her to to the finish line. She allowed McMath to finish ahead of her. The act of sportsmanship and classiness led to a thunderous ovation. The local media called it one of the most inspiring sports-related acts they've ever seen. Who says sportsmanship is dead? Check out the video here.

Yes there are still sportsmanship. The problem is that there's a lot of athletes who only cares about themselves, and points fingers at the whole team if him/her misses up.

And they are the ones making the money...getting rewarded for bad behavior.

It's all over today really, but I agree Deborah.. making BIG money and that's the reason there isn't much sportsmanship anymore. They have to be fiercely competitive in order to maintain or break into that payscale. What's more important to your future (as a baseball, football or basketball player).. a contract worth millions or being a good sport? I'd like to say good sport, but I'd be lying. I'd like to say I'd try for both, but to ensure my family is set for at least one generation... i'd step on a QB or two to make my point. The good news.. I'm not in that position; so I can come onto SodaFeed and play Monday morning QB all day. :)

Sportsmanship is something we need to get through the game. I am a bowler myself, and have found that poor sportsmanship can leave the alleys in sheer misery, and in effect, no one does their best in situations like that. It's not just about winning, but about helping each other along the way to become much better athletes, even if those of athletes are on the other team. Just think of this; "We are all in this together, so why not send some love to each other instead of hatred that we lost against them". In effect the other team may be better, but still, they are human beings, just like us, with their own struggles, and their own victories, weather it's on the court, on the ball field, or the gridiron, or even the house lanes. Just something to think about the next time you "get your A-Game on".

It was heartwarming to see this video. So much emphasis today is on winning at all costs. It was great to see an athlete give dignity to another athlete. Megan u r the true winner in the race we call life. God bless u?

The lessons life have taught me are that there are winners, losers, good sports and those of us that strive on the fringes of society despite the others and the odds.

I commend that girl for the good sportsmanship showed out on the field today. At least her team mates will know that it was for a good reason. If the girl ahead kept up her pace and speed she would've won anyways but it's good to know there are still good people in the world today.

It makes you look a hell of a lot better. And it's a great ego boost. People will pay more attention to you than the person who may have eaten you if you showcase some sportsmanlike conduct. It's a nice change from the jealous and bitterness that normally comes with sports. Be polite and you'll shine the brightest.

Anybody who has ever had the pleasure of watching the Keystone Wildcats' of LaGrange, Ohio various sports teams would recognize sportsmanship at it's epitome.
This applies to both the women and the men.
The stuff that goes on in the NBA only appeals to the thug life crowd.

Each and everyday on some field, somewhere, there are kids of ALL ages that will do the right thing and exhibit good sportsmanship. In spite of our "Adult" behaviors, kids do "get" sportsmanship, in spite of how some adults may coach their team. On those occasions, those kids that do get it, and exhibit good sportsmanship, they are sometimes thought of negatively by some adults and other participants. To those who would give them grief I say kiss my you know what...kids "get it" but sadly many adults forget "it" when they crosso over to adulthood...

Absolutely ....just like we teach our kids....it's how you play the game.Amazing to me that 8 year olds get it and some of the "pros" who should know better and can certainly afford ( literally ) to be gracious, don't follow the same lesson! :(

Well, I sure there are a lot of "pros" with lower IQ's than 8 year old kids.

People may believe in it but if you go to any baseball, football, etc game it sure doesn't seem to be the case. How many games do you see idiots fight like fools or when a play of the opposing team gets hurt will cheer. More so watch any Little League Baseball game and watch the parents scream & yell at the umpires (many who do it for free) for a call they don't like.

Sportsmanship is alive and well. Sadly, it doesn't get as much notoriety as the bratty prima donna millionaires in pro sports. Apparently bad behavior gets more coverage than Vogel. Bravo for the real sports heros.....we know you're out there somewhere.

Just not in PRO sports! Professional athletes, for the most part, are horrible role models and have forgotten the love of the sport...they only care about what they are being paid.
