Yes, he forfited his legacy by allowing and initiating the cover-up of young boys being sexually abused. He was an adult in authority, who should have been protecting these boys. He had children himself yet he allowed his pride to over rule his morallity and common decency.

Build the statues based on the completed life of public figure. In other words, wait until they have passed and if their life was worthy, erect it and dedicate it posthumously.

He knew what was going on and did nothing for those abused kids. He should rot in hell along with Sandusky and all the rest that knew and did nothing.

The simple answer is yes. What in the world was Joe Pa thinking? I am a really big University of Tennessee Football fan, but I always held a huge amount of respect for Joe Paterno. If He had reported Sandusky he would have been a huge Hero! I just don't know why he didn't report it? It would not have hurt his image any, it would have built it up more than what it already was.

I live in PA and I fell that it MUST be taken down and melted ! I went to Penn State for a time and now I won't admit it to anyone. Joe did some good but look at what he did in the end. It was very convenent to die as I believe he would have died in prison.

I do. The safety of even one child is far more important than any football program. The
man gave up his sacred place on campus when he allowed the first child to be harmed.

the whole story is very sad.maybe they can find a less prominent place to place it in the future.the wounds are too raw at the present time.everyone needs time for the wounds to heal.he is part of their positive as well as sad history.

It is sad in a way, everything he did to be honored with that statue is suddenly wiped out of the history of the school. We would lose an extremely huge part of the history of the US if everyone in Politics or other high places were suddenly erased from the pages because of inappropriate sexual behavior or the knowledge thereof. I understand that it was inexcusable because it was against a child, but it doesn't change the fact that this person actually existed and actually did some good and was honored for it at one time. We have become a nation of petulant children. "I don't like him anymore because he did something that was bad, so I will just pretend he never existed." Unfortunately that attitude creeps over into much of American culture and will ultimately be what brings this country to its knees. Face it people, no one is perfect.

Normally I would forgive one indiscretion by someone who did a lot of good. Unfortunately Paterno overlooking something as serious as sexual assault overrides all his positive accomplishments.

Well, both answers actually. I understand taking it down now.. for a time. It's just begging for vandalism right now.

But I think that after this is all dealt with, they should put it back up. The man was still a very important part of the universities history and, good or bad, he made a long term mark there.

The only reason for leaving that disgraceful statue there would be for the public to spit on but I am sure they do not want the constant reminder of Paterno's miserable failure every time they go to see a football game. Paterno brought his own demise upon himself when he chose to cover for a perverted monster and were he still alive I would be perfectly fine with him sharing a jail cell with his pedo-buddy Sandusky.

This is a tough one to decide. There are statues of Napoleon, Genghis Khan and others who were brutal and responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. But some bad men had significant impact on history and their statue is a record of history more than a salute to the person. Paterno though isn't in the caliber of shaping history, and his statue is an affront to the victims.

It should be dismantled, sold for scrap and the proceeds given to the victims. Paterno covered up the sexual abuse of children.

I am torn on this - he is guilty of not following through on something that was crucially important..but, really there is such a diffusion of blame - I feel like he is a scapegoat in a way..the coach that actually saw Sandusky raping that boy is much more culpable and no one even mentions him. It's weird. Why would a strong, grown man not stop the rape he witnessed - I mean - it was an old man and a child - how intimidating can a naked pervert be to a coach and football player? instead he went in another room and called his dad. By the time he reports it to Paterno the incident is watered down because it's one person's word against another person's word..If I were Paterno I would have been wondering why he didn't stop it right then and there or call the police...I dunno..the whole thing is just tragic.

Statues are for people who are admired. In the wake of what is now known, it is impossible to admire a man like Joe Paterno. It's impossible to think that this man deserves a statue on campus.

The decision was correct. To not remove it would have been an insult to the victims of the abuse that Sandusky was guilty of, and that Paterno swept under the rug.

His statue should be taken down and recycled. Otherwise, pedophiles will believe that no matter how many victims they molest, it will be okay. If the pedophile is a doctor, he/she will believe that they will get light sentences because they are doctors. Nobody is above the law. To leave his statue in place is to say that being a pedophile is okay as long as you are doing other things of value.
Being a football fan, I do not want to see his statue everytime I go to a football game. I will not think of the game, but of Paterno letting his pedophile buddy run amok in the locker room.
What is this country afraid of? If you think it is okay to leave it up simply because of his good actions, then put the statue where it belongs, in prison. Seriously, put the statue in a prison so pedophiles will realize that even when they are dead, they will be punished.

I think the president of penn state should be removed as well!! Anyone in charge during the time the acts of rape were committed should be fired immediately, they are just as guilty for putting profits and rankings above the well being of innocent children

The statue represents the GOOD things he has done for the university. This is why people are so hard to get ahead in their careers. It is sad to know how people do knee jerk reactions when things happen and the president of the college did so under pressure.

You can do a million things rights but all they look at is the one thing you did wrong. While this is not a bash against what happened and I really do feel for all that were affected by this.

Taking down a statue WILL NOT make it go away!
