I think this is more common than people seem to realize.
Rape is so horrifying, that it truly is hard for a non-victim to understand. Empathizing with the incredible physical and life long psychological torture of rape is just something many people aren't able to quickly comprehend. I was able to experience a portion by dating a girl for two years that had been raped, and it definitely "brought it home", if you will.
Couple this with the fact that many people find it difficult to understand the feeling of being hounded every waking moment of your life, and I believe her when she says she misspoke.
In the end, she apologized sufficiently. She's just an actress, but I do feel bad for her all around.

K-Stew is K-Sorry.
“Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart apologized on Friday for comparing life in the paparazzi spotlight to being raped, saying she had made "an enormous mistake."
"The photos are so...I feel like I'm looking at someone being raped...A lot of the time I can't handle it," the 20-year-old actress told the July edition of Britain's Elle magazine in remarks released on Wednesday.
Stewart, a spokeswoman for the group Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), was especially upset that she had offended rape victims.
"I really made an enormous mistake -- clearly and obviously. And I'm really sorry about my choice of words," Stewart told People magazine.
"'Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought," she added. "People thinking that I'm insensitive about this subject rips my guts out. I made a big mistake."
Earlier this week, RAINN had called Stewart's comments to Elle inappropriate, noting that rape is a violent crime rather than a mere intrusion.
The group on Friday said it "appreciates Kristen Stewart's sincere apology regarding these comments" and looked forward to working with her again in the future.

People use terms in a loose manner all the time. That doesnt mean they are belittling the true meaning of the term in doing so.
KS apologized. It is a non-story.
Someone who stalks you relentlessly, injects him/herself into your life and takes something from you without your permission, it is in effect raping. I realized this several years ago and haven't bought a magazine since, because I didn't want to contribute to the emboldening of the paparazzi.
Stewart has every right to feel the way she does and to verbalize it. How would any of us handle the complete and utter loss of our privacy? It would be devastating. Quite simply, we do not know what it is like (thank goodness). Until you know for sure how it feels, cut her some slack.
Clash of the Titans.Jake Gyllenhal was eye-candy for them too.Kirsten Stewart
looks like shes related to Eminem and the wicked witch of the east.
These kids become popularized by the media and appear larger than life, yet they engage in the most despicable acts possible. Even my 7 year old tells me she is "bad."
And to complain about the media following her around is an oxymoron. She would not be followed around if they didn't push her into the media.
