Do Video Game 'Barks' Annoy You?

You!

One unfortunate aspect of writing video games is that NPCs (non-player characters) have to react dynamically to a real person. The game world is usually populated by many NPCs, not all of them important, and it would be literally impossible to have them respond differently every time a player interacts with them. As a result, players often hear the same "barks" over and over. And over.

A couple of years ago, Kotaku writer Kirk Hamilton pointed out that enemies in "Splinter Cell: Conviction" can sometimes say the protagonist's name an overwhelming amount of times in a short span of time. More recently, a random throw-out line from town guards in "Skyrim" struck players as so odd that it turned into a meme: "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee." Do these repetitive barks annoy you, or do you take them in stride?

I have fun with it, besides it'd be unrealistic to expect the developers to come up with infinite responses for NPC characters.

Trying to converse with Garrus in ME2="I'm in the middle of some calibrations" 96% of the time. As for the arrow joke dosen't annoy me because I shoot them with an arrow to the knee and they don't care and walk away... usually on fire.

Arrow to the knee jokes are so yesterday, but have you seen those warriors from Hammerfell? They have curved swords. CURVED. SWORDS.

I always talk to the guards in games just to see what bark they will say next. They can be humourous and entertaining and it can be a great place to put a laugh or two in abit of random throwaway dialogue

Nah not really, they're an acceptable break from reality that you just get used to.In massive, supremely made games like Skyrim, it's especially not a problem.

Random people saying random crap to you out of nowhere doesn't even happen in real life so goodness knows why they keep building it into PC games.

If I want to fkin talk to someone i'll bloody well click on them won't I.

No they usually don't. I generally ignore repetitive remarks by NPCs when playing a game, though playing Skyrim I do get annoyed when guards keeping saying "Hey, I know you" over and over. Other than that that's about it.

I snuck into a guard tower in Skyrim but was seen. I wasn't arrested though. The guard was sitting at a table with food and looked up at me and said, "Let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll." I stole his sweet roll for that.
