I think it's much more creative, fun and interesting to make your own Halloween costume. When I was a kid, my mother used to be sewing and crafting like crazy to complete costumes for me and my siblings to wear on October 31st while trick-or-treating. Our costumes were ALWAYS unique and great-looking, much better than the junk you buy or rent. I'll never forget the Spanish flamenco dancer's dress she made for me in the sixth grade for our school's annual Halloween party. It was a lot of work for her, and the dress turned out frigging AWESOME as hell. Thanks, Mom!

Do-it-yourself costumes are often the best and most original around! I've been "doing it myself" for a number of years now, because the characters I want to be for Halloween usually don't have designated, licensed costumes for sale. For example, three years ago, I was Alex from "A Clockwork Orange." Good luck finding any brick-and-mortar shop selling bowler hats and codpieces together. And this year, I have my cowichan sweater and jelly shoes all ready to take on the persona of "The Dude."

Every year for about 8 years, I have been Sparrow and love it. I actually tell people I am coming as Jack Sparrow and still win the contest.I bought this costume years ago and it still rocks every time I wear it. I'll wear it again this weekend since the latest movie came out - and will probably win again - even though I told them what I was going to be again - and again - and again! LOL!

I think it is creative and fun. You turn it into a family project with your kids. What better memory for your kids to have that they made their Halloween costumes with Mom and Dad.

Some of the best costumes I've seen were home made, a lot of very creative, original ones. I prefer to do-it myself, one year I did myself up as a giant joint (marijuana cigarette to those who don't know, all three of ya!)

AWESOME! RHPS is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's so bad, it's good! Did you and your friend (with benefits!) break into song, "Hot Patootie/Bless My Soul?" Did anyone else dress up as a "Satanic Mechanic?" Or a "Sweet Transvestite" from Transsexual, Pennsylvania? Those are two EXCELLENT Halloween costumes!

HECK YES!! It's an awesome movie!! :D We haven't had Halloween here yet but we might just learn it so we can break out into song... or we may do the Time Warp. :)

We tryed to get her dad to dress as the "sweet transvestite" but he wouldn't do it :(

Oh you should see it! They're like... nearly exact replicas of the costumes from the movie! :)
