I like the ones I have done, all home made. Jebuz Christ, a damn fine Klingon, and Lord Siva. All for parties. Halloween is a Discordian holy day.

hey, if you have the skills to make your own costume I say go for it. If you don't actually have the skills (which, for most costumes, are not that difficult to acquire) then please don't though, you'll just end up disappointing everyone involved. I've made most of my hallowe'en costumes for the last 14 years of my life, including this year, and I'm planning on making one next year too. Thrift stores and your grandmother's closet are excellent places to find great stuff for making costumes. @Blackberry Graz, yes hallowe'en is about spirits and devils and stuff, even us good Christians don't pretend it isn't. It's the one day a year that we get to give in to our innate fascination with evil and darkness. Everyone, even you has this inner dark part, we just admit it but you apparently don't. Oh well, the worst that could happen is that you end up with a mental disorder because you've been repressing all this stuff for so long, while we've all been happily letting it out once a year.

My sons and I went slightly retro this year and dressed up as the Simpsons the Saturday before Halloween. Ha! I was Lisa, my yongest boy-Homer and my oldest-Bart...won 3rd in a costume contest in Houston. 300 or so participants and 6 categories. On the actual day of Halloween they both wanted to be Michael; so I went to the thrift store, bought some plain items, bedazzled and painted them and Wah-lah! Two M.J. costumes for under $40 bucks...yeah, we rock! Lol! Us as the Simpsons Simpsons http://images.sodahead.com/pr... The King of Pop Lives

Awesome! Store bought costumes lack creativity. I think that making your costume is part of the fun of Halloween. I always dressed my kids in homemade costumes and my rules for the costumes were that they had to use stuff they could find around the house, they could only have a maximum of 3 accessories that were bought specifically for the costume and they only had the 48 hours prior to Halloween to assemble it. Tonight, I saw so many store bought costumes that the parents probably paid at least $30 for their kids to go trick or treating for 2 1/2 hours for $6 worth of candy.

halloween is not a feast that should be celebrated, it is sorcery, i do not mean to offend the people celebrating it but the feast itself that is not supposed to be practiced. it is the worship of evil spirits and hell. sorry i was mean but that's what halloween is all about...i believe its the real truth

I made costumes for kids before my daughter, and, for my Bella, I hand sewn them...but over their coats, so they could display them.

To see their cheer and faces was great.

It works. Make sure you light them up! Hand sprays, neons...; )

A few years ago, a kid knocked on my door on Halloween night. He was about 10 years old. He wore a suit, tie, hair slicked back and he wore dracula teeth. He was carrying a briefcase which was bulging with candy.
This kid informed me he was a lawyer. And he said if I didn`t give him any candy he would sue me.
LOL I gave him candy and a dollar. The kid impressed me.

It is much more fun and creative making your own Halloween costume. I made Halloween costumes for my children a few times when they were young, especially for contests. I went through so much trouble making my son into a tree using a plastic trash can and tree branches. One time I made him into "Father Time" he won the contest. My younger son's father made him a real life "Jaws" costume, a lot of work.

I have Slytherin robes and a 10th Doctor (Doctor Who) costume that are awesome. But that's probably because they're not just for Halloween, they're for cosplay. :3

Back when I used to dress up for Halloween, my best costumes were the ones I made myself. The store-bought ones worked in a pinch. Now at most I just dress a bit more risque and go heavy on the make-up. It's the only time of year I can do that and not really stand out.

We always had homemade costumes when I was a kid. If my mother didn't make them for us, we made them ourselves. I usually don't go anywhere for Halloween anymore, but anytime I need a costume, I pull out the old creativity spark! I've been everything from Little Bo Peep to Medusa to a Chinese take-out box.....

Last Halloween. The chubby neighbour girl. She is about 11 and if you know the 'Bee Girl' from old 'Blind Melon' music videos then that is her,
    but,
If only she had a bee costume. No, she made her own costume which was her Dad's bathrobe and then a thick red bath towel wrapped conically on her head. Add a rather liberal application of grandmothers red lipstick.
I said "What are you.. a stormtrooper?" and she says (obviously) "..uh no, Im a Princess!".
But let me say this - I never had to hold back so much laughter and I will never forget that costume.

It's the ONLY way to go for me. Seriously, pre-made should ONLY be a last resort, and that's if you either don't have time to gather materials or the finances for it.

Even then, I STILL make a desperate attempt to throw something together, even if it's just simple. This year I'm going as a mad scientist; I even got costume contacts to complete the creepy look this year!

They can definitely be pretty awesome. My mom made me a cotton candy costume when I was in kindergarten. She took and old shirt of hers aand ripped up some old disposable hospital pillows *they had blue innards) and sewed the pillows to her old shirt, and took some fsbric to cover my shoes and made a hat somehow. I just out her shirt on over my normal clothes and went like that. I wish I knew where those pics were...I remember it was very warm.
