Movies based on video games are usually a bad idea. "Prince of Persia," "Far Cry," "Resident Evil," "Silent Hill" -- not awful but they're not movies you go back to. Video games based on movies, well, there are so many of them you could argue either way. The "Alien vs. Predator" game was excellent in both of its incarnations, but "Enter the Matrix" was a disaster. "Star Wars" seems to do well, but "Star Trek" game haven't made much of an impact.
But turn a comic book into a video game, and most of the time you've got a winner. GeekoSystem writer Rollin Bishop notes that the success of "Batman: Arkham City" is evidence comic book characters are always in demand with gamers. And as Comic-Con fans will attest, comic books and video games are never too far apart.

Besides the new "Batman" series, superhero games have been treated almost as well as superhero movies. "Spider-Man" games have traditionally fared well, and and of the "Marvel vs. Capcom"-type games are cult phenomenons. In fact, anything on an arcade machine is going to rule. Hell, even "The Punisher" was great.

Of course, it's not a straight shot every time. Anyone who played "Catwoman" or "Superman 64" can attest to that. But for the most part, comic books seem to have a pretty clean record.

Yes, they can make good games, if done right. Until recently, no one has been doing them right. At first video games based on anything was merely a way to cash in on their fame. More recently, some people have actually starting giving these games the attention they deserve and making them good games.
We are still waiting on some titles to have a decent game made for them. However, if nothing else, Batman is at least setting the bar for the rest.
