Did You Enjoy the Olympics Opening Ceremony?

The opening ceremony for the 2012 summer Olympics aired last night and was a sight to be seen! The production values and imagery may have been the best in Olympics history. Taking place at the sight of the Olympic games in London, England, the ceremony featured some of the most memorable characters and public figures in the country's history.

Viewers saw Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling read a short tale before the appearance of England's most infamous villains--including her own creation in Voldermort (100 foot tall version). Then, we a fleet of Mary Poppins, not Harry Potter, come to the rescue and fight off Voldermort and the gang of villains.

Millions also watched Rowan Atkinson reprise his role of Mr. Bean on the grandest stage imaginable, complete with the hilarious facial expressions that made fans fall in love with his character nearly two decades ago. As usual, it didn't end well for Mr. Bean, who couldn't keep up with the orchestra or the runners from Chariots of Fire.

Perhaps the most memorable entrance of all was that of Queen Elizabeth, who jumped out a helicopter piloted by the current James Bond, Daniel Craig. OK, maybe she had a stunt double, but it still looked cool! In a fun twist, we saw a brief musical on the new age of social media, complete with Facebook statuses and tweets popping up as the performers presented a young love story. Overall, an impressive show visually!

But, what about you SodaHeads: Did you enjoy the opening ceremony?

There were some great moments. Then there were some OK moments. Paul M needs to retire. Some of it I just didn't get. For example the beds . I guess it was an English thing. Explain me Lucy. Love the torch and the fireworks with Pink Floyd in the background. Cool

The beds were a political thing for socialized health care.

Not very political, Britons are proud of our NHS and the Great Ormond Street Hospital is based near the Olympics.

Very political, they could have went in an infinite number of directions instead they make references to their health care system, how could that not be political?
  • Twinky john doe 2012/07/29 22:40:57

GOSH is a NHS Charity that is based 'round the corner from the Olympics.

I understand that for the US the NHS is a political entity, but it really isn't in the UK because all sides are pro-NHS, they just debate which ways to make it better, but never to get rid of it.

Right, that ceremony is called propaganda.

Are you implying it propagating from Britain to the US, from Britain to the world, or from the Olympics to Britain?

Britian to the world, why must the government control everything?

I find it was more Britain showing something she's proud of.
There is no "must", or "everything" we have private healthcare too, but we want the government to provide healthcare for everyone.
Many people in the US see healthcare as a priviledge, in the UK it's a right.

I'm sure some Brits have a problem with paying for people who don't contribute.
  • Twinky john doe 2012/07/30 19:59:26
    Twinky
yes some have a problem with welfare payments being the rate they are, but VERY few would want people who don't contribute to die if they got ill. As I said, we don't see healthcare as a priviledge.
A few months ago I saw a homeless man pass out, and phoned an ambulance who took him to a+e (er) and I guess treated him for alchohol poisoning, all funded by my tax - and I'm happy with that.

My husband never gets sick, put has worked all his life so has paid lots into the NHS, I on the other hand have had meningitis, appendicitis, ME, septicemia etc. and have probably taken more out than I've put it, but it's swings and roundabouts. It's also about the idea of judging a nation by how it treats its poorest.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an NHS hospital specifically for children. It's probably our most prized possession.

The NHS...the National Health Service is a service free for anyone to use in the UK without cost. (Not like the US where you need insurance if you have a bump). Treat first, finance later =P

That said, it was tedious -.-; I think someone was on mushrooms when they put that together.

You can't get elective surgeries bit anyone who goes into the emergency room and is in need of treatment gets it, hospitals are not allowed to turn people away and never do. Many people know that your bill disappears in 7 years then reappears in others insurance premiums. Essentially we have sick care for everyone but not health care.

..... ya' know Fire, in my world, the Olympics is supposed to be about sports and the participants, maybe even heritage of the host Country

.............. the Opening was anything but that in my estimation.

I read that the flag tipping was not to be done,

to any one, or any thing, but I'd think,

merely out of respect to the Host,

    rather than the 'Person',

    it would be done...

    I know the Games are

a time honored tradition, and that

the athletes are the stars, and, imho,

all the hoopla and extravaganza is unneccesary...

Seems to me that it takes the focus away from the point of it all ;p

    ...... my sentiments exactly !

It will be a challenge to top that opening that China did for the last games .... now that was spectacular.
