Did You Enjoy the Olympics Opening Ceremony?

The opening ceremony for the 2012 summer Olympics aired last night and was a sight to be seen! The production values and imagery may have been the best in Olympics history. Taking place at the sight of the Olympic games in London, England, the ceremony featured some of the most memorable characters and public figures in the country's history.

Viewers saw Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling read a short tale before the appearance of England's most infamous villains--including her own creation in Voldermort (100 foot tall version). Then, we a fleet of Mary Poppins, not Harry Potter, come to the rescue and fight off Voldermort and the gang of villains.

Millions also watched Rowan Atkinson reprise his role of Mr. Bean on the grandest stage imaginable, complete with the hilarious facial expressions that made fans fall in love with his character nearly two decades ago. As usual, it didn't end well for Mr. Bean, who couldn't keep up with the orchestra or the runners from Chariots of Fire.

Perhaps the most memorable entrance of all was that of Queen Elizabeth, who jumped out a helicopter piloted by the current James Bond, Daniel Craig. OK, maybe she had a stunt double, but it still looked cool! In a fun twist, we saw a brief musical on the new age of social media, complete with Facebook statuses and tweets popping up as the performers presented a young love story. Overall, an impressive show visually!

But, what about you SodaHeads: Did you enjoy the opening ceremony?

I must agree, as do many people here I've talked to. JK Rowling - okay. But where was Shakepeare, Dickens, Tennyson, Chaucer and the many other famous talented writers Britain has produced?

The countryside thing was a little slow, but I loved the rapid change to industrialization. Well done, Britain!

boring for the most part. interesting as to the different stages of history. disappointed in the low height of the cauldron. can't see it except from within the stadium or from a plane.

Yes, but even as a Brit some of it confused me. Especially why they chose those epriods of history in particular out of the thousands of years of history we have.

And the scene of Great Ormand Street Children's Hospital being attacked by Voldermort before an army of Mary Poppins' saved the day was just baffling....

But visually, it looked very impressive, especially the rings being forged and the dance scenes showwing the history of British popular music.

That hospital bit was a "toss off" to try to make the rest of the world (read US THERE) feel good about socialized medicine.

We won't. We don't want lesser care for higher cost, but it made the hollyweird celeb producer feel good.

Actually it's lesser care for lesser cost, we choose to spend very little on it...

Are you seriously suggesting that the sequence about the NHS and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital was one giant national dig at the US?

From what I gathered about the Voldermort "attack" it was a child's nightmare. As a child I spend a lot of time in the hospital & remember how frightening it was to be away from my "mommy."

Not all Americans are against "Universal Healthcare." Many of us look forward to the day when ALL of us are covered & don't have to worry about going bankrupt if someone in our family becomes extremely ill.

That is the bit that confuses most people in Britain about the US system. The US puts the most money out of any country into its health system (as percentage of GDP) and has access to some of the best doctors, drugs, treatments and facilities anywhere. Yet if you don;t have insurance, or your insurance only covers a certain amount, or they reject your claim because you made a tiny not-related error on your application form, an illness or injury can financially cripple you or worse: the treatment that's readily there won't be given to you.

It was more like a music concert, and parts of movie roles having nothing to do with what Olympics represents. In other words corny.

I thought the overt political message was over the top. What a shame. And those happy communist like outfits the Us athletes had to wear with the big Polo logo on them....please...

It was clearly a message designed to push national healthcare. What else could that hospital number-nurse thing have possibly had to do with the Olympics?
  • Inquisi... Bronar 2012/07/30 20:36:29
    Inquisitve Kat
Uh... let's see... could it simply be an attempt to show their own history, which just happens to include national healthcare?
  • Bronar Inquisi... 2012/07/31 13:53:57

And what the hell does national healthcare have to do with the Olympic athletes? Maybe next time we host we should throw in a nice number about illegal immigrants getting food stamps, huh?

Doesn't she always? Looks like she has just bit into a lemon everytime we see her.

I can't imagine having to go through life being so stuffy and proper. Not even for all that money and posh surroundings. Gotta cut loose once in a while and be silly. She doesn't have that luxury, except for maybe behind closed doors and under the most hush, hush of circumstances, but honestly, I doubt the old broad has it in her. I think she's naturally stuffy.

Weathering the Brit's gossip columns would be difficult, and keeping up the appearances, I'm sure.

Perhaps I'm ignorant on their responsibilities, but from what I know, it's a life of philanthropy for others and privilege for them.

Their schedules are pretty brutal...my take on the Princes' military service is that this provides them more free time. Royalty is an interesting relic particularly in England where to an extent the Royals have becomes as much a money making tourist attraction as a part of the government.
