Did Refs Call Too Many Fouls in Celtics-Heat Game 1?

The Miami Heat fired the first shot in the battle for the Eastern Conference and the right to go to the NBA Finals. Their opposition, the Boston Celtics, just looked a step slower and did not execute as well. The Heat took Game 1 by a final score of 93-71, led by the team's two-headed monster in LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Unfortunately, some poor officiating overshadowed the Heat's big win on Monday night.

NBA referee Danny Crawford and his fellow officials seemed a little too whistle-happy throughout the game, calling fouls on the Celtics left and right. Some fouls were the right call; others, you could make a case for. But if you watched the first half, you witnessed some downright questionable calls -- specifically, technical fouls given to Celtics head coach Doc Rivers and team leaders Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

Those technical fouls were panned by observers online and even at the game. NBA on ESPN commentator and former Heat head coach Jeff Van Gundy was particularly stunned, saying that it doesn't matter if it's a high school game or the Eastern Conference Finals -- some of those fouls should have never been leveled against the Celtics.

Obviously, the Celtics have to win their games no matter what calls come their way, but it's always unfortunate when officials—fairly or unfairly—have to affect the tone of playoff games.

if you think there were too many fouls against the celtics in the first game, look at tonight, these refs should be fired for aiding the heat. the nba needs to look at who they hire for these home games, its such a farse. can't even take these pros seriously anymore. absolutely disgusting. are they afraid their mvp won't make it to the finals without a little help?

    Calm down!
Ref's need to let them play the game! It's no fun to watch when they blow the whistle every 3 seconds.

The Celtics need to score more points and the fouls don't matter. Don't put the game in the refs hands.

Because they will determine who will be this year's champion.
  • keliffa 2012/05/29 22:21:09
Too many teams try to get inside the ref's heads before there games against the Heat, hoping to get an edge. All teams get away with certain things.

When one remembers the refs more than the players, the refs were too visible.

The Heat attempted 23 FT's and the C's attempted 21 FT's.... the only difference here is that the Heat were able to make their FT's, the C's not so much. The Heat are the better team, they have the 2 best players of the series.
  • Jessica 2012/05/29 19:59:40
    YES! Way to many
  • luisofs... Jessica 2012/05/29 20:03:58
They only attempted 2 more free throws than the Heat.... "too many"?
  • Sterling 2012/05/29 19:57:01
Rondo deserved his tech, the rest were complete garbage. Good grief.
  • luisofs... Sterling 2012/05/29 20:05:04
The delay of game was a valid technical foul along with the Rondo Technical, the rest were uncalled for.
  • Sterling luisofs... 2012/05/29 20:12:20
Ya but you hardly ever see people call a delay of game. I think Stan Van Gundy said it right, "delay of game is a rule, but so are traveling and palming the ball."
  • luisofs... Sterling 2012/05/29 23:33:00
Yea I've only seen that called once, but still if a ref sees it then you have to call it.
  • BoardinOK 2012/05/29 19:47:19
Yup. Need to let them play. They did better in the 2nd half.

  • Tuna 2012/05/29 17:59:56
The Hawks before them, then the 76ers tried to tell the officials how dirty the Celtics play; the Heat got "beat up" by the Pacers before they started fighting back. This series is going to be BRUTAL.

You didn't watch the game, did you.
  • Tuna Sterling 2012/05/31 17:54:05
Sure did; I live in S. Fla. This Heat team hearkens back to the glory days of The U hurricanes; the team America LOVED to HATE; can't figure out why. Refs make bad calls every game BUT this was the Heat and the beloved Celtics (who on the other hand can do no wrong; like Notre Dame football; perennial favorites)(.
