Did Lana Del Rey Redeem Herself on 'Letterman'?

After her underwhelming performance on “Saturday Night Live,” we asked SodaHeads what they thought about Lana Del Rey. 55% voted her “talentless,” but did she redeem herself on “The Late Show with David Letterman”?

Though it’s true that she really had nowhere to go but up, responses to the Internet sensation’s latest performance of her song “Video Games” have been far more favorable.

Rolling Stone’s Matthew Perpetua wrote, “Her body language is still fairly stiff, but this time around, her performance was staged in a way that made her stillness seem deliberate and sort of unnerving. She comes off as understandably self-conscious in her singing, but delivers a much more controlled and dramatic performance than on SNL.”

TIME still places her in the “guilty pleasure realm” but others feel that the singer has redeemed herself, proving once and for all that her disastrous performance on “SNL” can be chalked up to nerves and inexperience.

What do you think? Did Lana Del Rey redeem herself on “Letterman”?

I'm not one to listen to this kind of music but I actually like it. Its different enough to get and keep my attention. And I didn't see anything wrong with her SNL performance either.

I like this song very much..she did much better here on Letterman..I'm afraid like Chris Isaac, she'll have a hit or two and then fade away into maybe acting or something else if she stays with this type of music because people(her fans) will start jumping ship lol..i wish her much luck
  • RawrRiot 2012/02/05 19:51:18
I just really don't think she has any stage presence at all. She can barely hold my attention for 10 seconds. I find myself staring at things that are behind her.

Lana is kind of cute, but this song is very depressing. On the other hand, in this day and age, this song is the theme for a lot of relationships.

I watched her with my wife on Letterman. She had the mike in her mouth. I think I understood about 5 words, maybe a few more. I didn't even know what she was singing about. My wife wasn't as kind as I am.

I think she did well this time. At least she's trying something different and interesting compared to a lot of canned pop artists these days. Besides, it's more intimate music, the kind you turn on for ambience which doesn't always translate well on a big show when you're expecting a huge voice and performance.

    Slightly. Very slightly.

Still not a fan, but she sounded somewhat better.

SNL wasn't her only bad performance, and this isn't exactly an amazing perfomance.

She simply isn't that good live, and is a massive letdown when you hear her voice on record.
  • Leo 2012/02/05 15:33:27
    Compared to letterman, she's brilliant!
  • TruBluTopaz 2012/02/05 14:25:46
I have no clue who she is, but I loved Kristen Wiig's characterization of her. It was pretty caustic and hilarious.

I agree with what people are saying. For me, when ever i listen to this i get sort of depressed and have to turn it off. I don't know if its her voice or how she is on stage when singing live but i just don't know...
  • PsychoCandy 2012/02/05 12:56:38
No. Don't like her. Never will.
  • cate 2012/02/05 12:46:25
When Brian Williams heckles you, you know you were bad. Even a Letterman stint can't remove the memory of that hopelessly tepid SNL performance.

Lana Del Rey's voice depresses me ... Maybe its a matter of taste, but everytime I hear her on the radio or whatever, I get depressed -__-
  • Beanybudd Glee_ky 2012/02/05 10:09:38
lol, don't you hate that?! I can't listen to some of Adele's songs because 3 of them were all on at the same time when we were on our way and also coming back from putting my kitty to sleep. I hate when music makes you depressed :3
  • Glee_ky Beanybudd 2012/02/05 11:25:30
yeah! xD hahah , and Adele isn't half as depressing as Lana Del Ray , that's the worst part O_O My condolences ( if i spelled it correctly ) on your kitty ;)
  • Beanybudd Glee_ky 2012/02/05 11:59:14
    Thank you for your condolences!

    Me too. It's so...bland.
I kind of like Born To Die, though, in the chorus her voice sounds better.
  • Glee_ky Calla Tor 2012/02/06 06:20:06
I haven't listened to it yet haha. Pretty sure i'm not going to either ;)

It is not her voice or her body language or even her look. --It is that her voice and body language do not go with her look.

Her voice and body language is that of a more air-head type of pop star, with uneven jet black shorter hair and dark eye-liner and a short puffy black with red trim skirt and ankle boots. But instead, she has this extremely pretty preppy 1960s school teacher look.
  • misha DebraJM... 2012/02/05 16:49:26

I thought she was just fine on SNL also.
  • Beanybudd 2012/02/05 06:45:48
I like her style. It's not for everyone but I like the simplicity which is similar to Lykki Li (idk if I spelt that right). It's the type you want to listen to when you want to keep your brain slow and calm, just let go, like at night or just relaxing. Just like how Bon Iver is perfect for the morning with the calmness of it or when you're in one of those "nothing" moods. If that makes any sense.

I recommend Blue Jeans by her.
  • Glee_ky Beanybudd 2012/02/05 09:51:55
Lykku Li is pretty different , yes she is calming and kind of monotone, but way better than Lana Del Rey.
  • Beanybudd Glee_ky 2012/02/05 10:06:48
Lykki Li definitely has that extra umf, not gonna argue about that!
  • Gregaj7 2012/02/05 05:57:33
Not music would even consider the thought of possibly buying.
  • AltPunkMetal 2012/02/05 05:34:25
I'm not a fan of her music, but at least she showed actual talent there.
  • Bunk11 2012/02/05 05:16:55
Umm, who's Lana del Rey? And I haven't watched Letterman in years, since he showed himself to be a left-wing whack job with that woman in pink twit. Whatever happened to them anyway?

But one thing is certain about her music:

Love Lana. Happy she's getting more exposure.
