Every election night has at least one standout television moment, and -- with all due respect to John King and his magical fingertips -- the clear winner Tuesday was Republican strategist Karl Rove, who staged a civil war on the air after Fox News called Ohio -- and therefore the entire election -- for President Obama.

It seemed a bit quick although when they count all the military ballots that got "misplaced" by our postal service, Romney will still not have enough. Rove, Norquist, and the like need to step aside and let the new voice of Republicnism come through - personal safety, personal freedom, and personal responsibility (including financial). We can win with this. These are weaknesses for the left. We need a broader reach and stop worrying about Soros and trying to counter balance his ilk. We must again become the voice of reason.

Elections returns should not be broadcast until the last poll closes. The bandwagon effect actually favors the *presumed* winner.

NBC was the first to call it, at 11:12pm eastern time, after all the contiguous 48's polls had closed... your theory about the bandwagon effect doesn't seem to have helped Obama in the last hour of Alaska's voting. I doubt it changed much about Hawaii's, either, since he was born there.

I was checking several sites during the election and they were all calling States for one candidate or the other with less than 10% of that State's results reporting. There were active predictions (by the "news" reporters) of Obama winning with less than half the States called. And contrary to what some may expect, Fox was making those calls even before CNN, HuffPo, Google/AP or NPR.
Your comment above is skipping over the whole process to final call of the winner.

When I mentioned election returns above, that includes any reporting of results or presumed results (including exit polling) from the time the first polls open until the last polls close.

That makes no sense. If a candidate is so far ahead in the electoral college that the race can be called before a given poll closes, no amount of votes at those polling places would matter. The election is, for all intents and purposes, finished whenever a candidate has won enough electoral votes.

The only two states that hadn't closed their polls were Hawaii and Alaska. Obama was always going to win Hawaii, Romney was always going to win Alaska. And neither state had any bearing whatsoever on the final outcome. Obama had already won.

Why? I've already read it and addressed it. There is no "bandwagon" effect either in theory or practice since both states were lost to one candidate and neither had any bearing on the election in general.

The vast majority of states had already finished voting, Marcus. Those two were the only ones that had not.

Your point was that the integrity of the election could be tainted if people saw from the news that their votes didn't matter. For every person outside Alaska and Hawaii, that was not true.

Turd Blossom is such a...well, turd blossom. All night long the networks were calling states for Rmoney when not a vote had been counted, but classifying states know to be solid blue as 'too early to call' to keep Rmoney either ahead or tied for most of the night to keep people watching.

Case in point (I was watching NBC News), Texas and Minnesota closed at the same time. With 0% of the vote counted in Texas, they gave those 38 EVs to Rmoney and said that Minnesota was 'too early to call', despite the fact that every poll showed Obama a clear winner in the state.
