David Beckham may be the most famous and recognizable soccer player in the world, but he'll be watching the London Olympics from home, as he failed to make the British soccer team's 2012 Olympic Squad. Beckham was on coach Stuart Pierce's shortlist of 35 players to be selected, but he did not make the final 18.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," Beckham said in a statement released to the media. "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

Perhaps Beckham wasn't selected due to the celebrity he has, but he no doubt would have increased the team's worldwide exposure on an Olympic level. Do you think David Beckham got snubbed from the Olympics?

I dont think he was snubbed. Stuart Pearce has given valid football reasons for his exclusion.)According to the BBC) Stuart phoned David personally to explain his decision - not sure what else he could have done to soften the blow.
On the plus side I am plased that Stuart is putting football ahead of publicity - top man.

he's not shown the briliance and skill that he used to have.. He's pretty much made his money.. and like most players who are supposed "super"stars.. they get the money and lo and behold.. they play when they want to play.. and most become complacent...sad..really... but he made his.. good for him..

Sometimes you don't make the cut, that's the real world. Acknowledge and move on....

C'mon be fair, new crop of talent coming through. Sir Beck's has to move over, he had his opportunity.

It's not about exposure, it's about putting your best athletes forward to compete among the best athletes in the world for a special event happening every four years. No one is saying Beckham isn't a talented athlete, but was he a cut above, and equal to, that elite status. I think that's the question. I couldn't answer that, but apparently, someone did.

Yes because the manager probably thought he'd overshadow him with his celebrity and status. Fortunately the three other players are top class so there's no diminution in quality.

Well, he left England to play in America, and he didn't do as well in trials as he could have, so, sorry about your luck.

besides, the original intent of the game was AMATURES, not highly paid professionals. So, I hope a bunch of young, motivated, unknowns make the squad and win it for GB.

Old and over the hill. Why do you think he's playing in America? If he had the skills he wouldn't be playing here.

If you don't have the skills they are looking for, you don't make the cut.

    Simple as that.

If he had had the skills, they would have included him. Can't always be on top form after all. They want to win, regardless of celebrity.
As a side-note, this is the first sports question I've been able to answer as all the others are about American sports/personages, making this the least international section on SH (even trumping News & Politics). Ah well.

His looks make him more popular than his actual soccer skills. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but there are a lot of great players in soccer if not better. He'll be fine.

To be honest with you..in the grand scheme of things David Beckham is just a moderatly good player. His popularity is soley based on his looks and his wife. There are hundreds of better soccer players out there that are playing in the Olympics.

    Think of it this way.

Sure, you need skill, you you also have to be able to get along with the team. If the group of people on the team click well and the passes are fluid, adding a new person would only disrupt that.

Beckham is yesterday's champion. Better to let the younger, better players have their day now.

First of all, the England coach's name is Stuart PEARCE, not PIERCE! :|

Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, it's time for some fresh legs on England's football team. David Beckham is one of the most respected players in the world but he has not been in form lately. It's evident with his team L.A. Galaxy. The Olympics Games is less than one month away... Pearce can't afford to take chances like that if he expects England to win a medal at the Games. Get more of the Under 21 players in the squad to give them the experience of playing at the Olympic level while having some of the ''in-form'' veterans to guide them as to what they must do.

This is what Stuart Pearce said about Beckham's chances in April 2012: "He's been a great ambassador but that's no guarantee he'll get in the squad. I'm picking on form and merit alone''. I agree with that!

However, I do believe that Beckham will be involved in the Olympics in some other form or fashion.

At the start I thought Germany would win. Spain seemed to be going round in circles and Germany were looking really good. However Germany fell away and surprisingly lost to Italy without a fight. Spain got stronger and were magical in the final.

Very true. It was really ironic to see Italy play in somewhat the same way as Germany did against them.

I think only the best should be on the team, and if he wasn't as good as the others he shouldn't be on it. I don't think it would be fair if he made the team just because he's extremely well known.

Becks has been too busy posing half naked with Victoria Beckam and hyping his cologne and making money to be truly focused on something that was supposed to be for amateurs.

I think Britain could use Beckham on the Olympics. They could have brought Beckham to the squad instead of Micah Richards. He would be useful in the British midfield which would be stronger. A midfield with Ryan Giggs and David Beckham could really increase the depth of the British team's play.
