Maybe not the biggest but a very large part of it. AMERICAN BANDSTAND was the first of many times we were intertained by him. If you look back over the years D.C was never the star he surrounded himself with other that intertained the true meaning of STARDOM & most have not figured that out.

Those who voted no are ignorant and out of touch.

If it wasn't for Dick Clark, many singers and musicians wouldn't be where they are today. He put those people in front of a huge audience during a time when USA was very racially divided and it was kind of wild and shocking to do such a thing.

He didn't care what you looked like, he cared about showcasing talent.

Absolutely. I grew up listening to him with American Bandstand. Still can remember his After Midnight and Soal Train spots on those shows. Hadn't thought of it in a long time. Those shows were great and what I'll best remember him for.

He had the best New Year's Eve show hands down. It's kinda sad he passed away because I grew up watching his New Year's show every year so it kind of feels like a part of my childhood has died too

I'm 67. We used to go to NY a lot when I was a kid. I asked Mama and Daddy if they would let me off in Philadelphia so I could be on AB. Of course, they said "no." I used to rush home everyday from school so I could watch AB. Yes, he was an icon and will sorely be missed.

Below is a quote from "www.billboard.com. 4/19 on the legacy of Dick Clark Appell is Dave Appell, my father. I think only time will tell if Clark will be an icon. I know he was a dear, close friend of my family for decades. He was a giving, appreciative man a mutual admiration society of my dad and Dick Clark. He appreciated my father's friendship. His autobiography "Rock Roll and Remember" dedicated it to my father. Dick Clark was a friend of my mom too. I realize this doesn't make me special but I feel he was a special friend of the family.
"He was a workhorse - he never stopped," says Appell, who led the orchestra on Clark's package tours. "He was always generous, always gave good advice. We had a thing in Philadelphia, once a month, where all the people in the music business got together - the distributors, musicians. He was always there."

I grew up with Dick Clark and so did my mother. He was around forever. And aside from Bandstand, he was THE show to watch on New Year's Eve. (Aside from when Duran Duran performed on MTV, of course. ;-D) It will not be the same without him. 2005 was a sad year, and those years after were bittersweet. It was obvious Dick would not be with us much longer and that life was not what it once was for him, so it was sad, but it was still better than not having him around. Now, we don't have him around. Losing Dick Clark is much like it was to lose Johnny (Carson, for those cultural illiterates). A passing of an era. A passing of someone who knew what the industry once was in its glory. A piece of history is dying with him. And let's not forget what AB did for social and racial advancement. People of all colours dancing together and bands, both black and white playing for the same crowds. Thank you, Dick for everything you gave us.

american bandstand, and all the imitators that sprang up in the 60's and 70's, gave lots of struggling performers a big career boost after appearing on tv when they had a record
on the air locally. houston had the larry kane show. after appearing on it with my band,
we got bombarded with job offers and had other kids in the high school asking for autographs when the week before we were just part of the student body. yes dick fits my definition of an icon.

Legends never die. Today he is remembered for his once-a-year party. I remember his once-a-week parties. And everyone knows he never grew old. You could count the years you aged and Dick didn't. The media is saying he was 82 years with us, but he's never going to leave.
