Could You Run a Marathon a Week? (One Woman Is Doing It For Cancer Research)

Julie Weiss knows all too well how terrible and deadly cancer is. While she was never diagnosed with cancer, her father was. Tragically, it was pancreatic cancer that ended his life. Now the Santa Monica, California resident is making the ultimate pledge: run 52 marathons in 52 weeks. Why, you ask? To raise money for cancer research.

How does running fit in this story in the first place? Weiss' father passed away just one week before she qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Yes, Weiss realizes 52 weeks equates to one whole calendar year. Yes, we're sure she also knows how hard on the body one marathon can be -- let alone 52. However, from the sound of things, there's definitely no stopping her from her goals.

Weiss, who is a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's TEAMHOPE, told KSDK.com "My goal is a million dollars....When people tell me I'm crazy or nuts, it means I'm on the right track and doing something good." So far, Weiss' official website marathongoddess.com has already raised over $100,000 towards her lofty and incredibly inspirational goal.

    Running?
    What is this madness?!
But seriously, she is something to be saluted. Turning something she loves to do into a help for others is amazing.
This is one of those things i wish i could do, and not only on a physical level, but how selfless she is. That's an amazing goal she has set for herself and she is an amazing woman!

The irony of her decision is that such extreme running is likely to create a catabolic imbalance in her body. That type of imbalance promotes many diseases, including cancer.

Meanwhile, I've found a way that just might end cancer pain quickly for many people. I don't make a dime off of it. It costs practically nothing. We're still getting feedback on it to fine tune it.

For this question, I will be visiting the people who commented in blue. Asking them to mow my lawn and take out the garbage when they run by.

I might be able to run a marathon in a week!

Seriously though... good luck to her. I am a cancer survivor and I lost my first wife to it so I know what a terrible disease it is. If her efforts can help with the research fundraising, awareness or anything then it will be worth it.

I better be able to since I'm a certified wild land fire fighter (red-carded). I think it's a good idea if I stay in shape for my health and safety.

If you gave me 52 weeks and combined how much I ran each week, I could manage the equivalent of a marathon or two per year. I hope she doesn't wind up killing herself doing this.

I think that this is awesome and if Ii were in shape I just might try it. However, after knee surgery I think focusing on running one marathon is a good enough goal for me. :)

More power to her. She's doing a good thing. From her photo looks like she can take it too. I tried that running thing several times when I was younger, on and off, from about late twenties or early thirties to my mid forties. It was a great way to get in shape. Problem was, my body was not made for running anything longer than about 440 yards, or what's now 400 meters. In school I was very fast. At age 14 and 15 I could run a 22O in just under 22 seconds and a 440 in about 53 seconds. I was on the 400 and 880 relay team in track. Then I started gaining weight, and my body has never looked back. In all those years of running 5K and 10K distances my weight never went lower than about 185. Too heavy, way too heavy for running those distances, and now in my past mid fifties I'm paying the price. Arthritis in every load bearing joint, gout from toes to hands, and tendinitis, caused in large part to the abuse I heaped upon myself by running too far too hard, and by participating in other outdoor sport endeavors too enthusiastically, like water skiing. However I can't say that I totally regret it. Just let it be a warning to you youngsters. Know your limits. Don't push the envelope too hard because it will push back sooner or later.
