Computer-Generated Pop Stars: Revolutionary or Ridiculous?

While one Japanese researcher is working to make violin strings out of spider silk, others are experimenting with music technology in a very different way. According to The Daily Caller, Hatsune Miku is a fictional Japanese pop star, or "Vocaloid," made from the sampled voice of actress Saki Fujita and a computer-generated green-haired image.

And though it's a kitschy idea, the computer-generated concert sold out in 24 theaters at $76 a ticket. Fans crowded into locations across Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to watch the final performances of Hatsune Miku, projected as a hologram and accompanied by a live band. For western audiences, videos of Miku performances might seem astounding. It's kind of like a Justin Bieber show... if Justin Bieber was a hologram. Is it really all that different? You tell us!

And if you want a peek at the computer-generated Japanese pop star in action, just click on the photo below or visit The Daily Caller article to watch the video.

If they can get her to not do drugs or alcohol, maybe she'll be a better role model than most "real" pop stars.

I think that this technology can supplement the growing batch of tools entertainers use when doing live performances. They can make a larger version of a real performer on stage so audience members in the back can get just as good a view of the star as those near the front. The artist performs and dances and a realistic 3D representation of him will be visible right behind him.

Just have a way for the cameras to follow the star and the rest will be easy.

It's impressive but personally, I find Miku's voice kind of annoying, I would like it more if it wasn't so high pitched.

You'd probably like Megurine Luka's voice more than Hatsune Miku's voice, then. It's not quite so high-pitched.

Considering most pop stars are horrible if singing "live" without the wonders of computer technology cleaning up their voices, I say, cut out the middle man (in this case, its the star)

Most people would usually say that Japanese Anime characters are gay and would like to see them die. But I on the other hand would say that Japan has really adapted the cartoon world to the MAX!!!!

using a non-sequitor to deflate the argument of another does not add credibility to your argument.

I think they're pretty fun, and it looks like they're doing a pretty good job with the concerts, from what little I've seen for free. I don't like all of the Vocaloid songs, but there are a few that I really like a lot, and can listen to over and over.

    Here's a couple of examples:

    【ミクリンレンルカハク】眠れぬ森の美女の侍女【オリジナル】:

Last Night, Good Night (Kaito and Miku Duet):

That's right, there are male Vocaloids, too. Kaito seems to be the male vocaloid with the most fans, followed by Len/Ren Kagamine (twin brother of Rin/Lin Kagamine). This information is for people who are new to Vocaloids. XD

I don't know about others, but the Vocaloids are intended for helping those who have trouble singing or can't get a band together. It was intended (for once) something other than just conning people out of their money. So, In my opinion, I think computer-generated pop stars are 'revolutionary'.

Why not? The current generation of pop stars are so fake that they might as well be computer-generated.

As long as they look like anime characters. When they try to make then look like real people, they always end up with those empty, serial-killer eyes.
