Computer-Generated Pop Stars: Revolutionary or Ridiculous?

While one Japanese researcher is working to make violin strings out of spider silk, others are experimenting with music technology in a very different way. According to The Daily Caller, Hatsune Miku is a fictional Japanese pop star, or "Vocaloid," made from the sampled voice of actress Saki Fujita and a computer-generated green-haired image.

And though it's a kitschy idea, the computer-generated concert sold out in 24 theaters at $76 a ticket. Fans crowded into locations across Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to watch the final performances of Hatsune Miku, projected as a hologram and accompanied by a live band. For western audiences, videos of Miku performances might seem astounding. It's kind of like a Justin Bieber show... if Justin Bieber was a hologram. Is it really all that different? You tell us!

    Very revolutionary. Miku is both singer and instrument, and her songs and lyrics are the ideas of an entire community, an entire culture. That's something that transcends any other artist.

    people that answer ridiculous is people that dont know anything about japan or their fashions, I'm a proud otaku and I love vocaloids a lot, miku is my fav. then the twins <3

    japan is crazy for this "girl" and from past japanese stuff western culture love it. Pokemon is just now dying down kinda. From anime/Toyota/wii I would say just wait till we get it and then everyones gonna copy it.

    I don't see a problem with this. I mean you guys can say that "real" (term up for debate) music artists are in danger all you like but if they lose to Vocaloids then that just goes to show how much talent they really have. If they're good enough then they should be able to hold their own against Vocaloids without worry.

    The fore-runners to this; bands like Kraftwerk, were bearable, but Miku's voice is just terrible and her image isn't much better.

    I want the opinion and voice of a real person, not the combined opinions of a bunch of business men and the metalic vocal cords of a computer. It may be interesting but it will never replace real singers.

    look, don´t take so personally. I just think the lyrics that they put to the songs are not good. They are not deep emotions but good selling cliches. You dont have to get so pissed off. This site is for opinions. And no matter what you say this will always be my opinion.You may like these songs, and i respect that but i will always think computer singers are stupid.
