Chris Rock and controversy seem to go hand in hand, so he surely knew he would push a few buttons when he took to Twitter on the Fourth Of July to post the following tweet. Cue the social-media backlash. While many Twitter users applauded Rock, others slammed him as unpatriotic. (See the tweet below.)

IS CHRIS ROCK PREJUDICED?

"Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks."

Chris is a no holds barred comedian. Yes, he is foul & yes I know he offends a lot of people. But he does something in a way not many others can pull off. He talks about everyone & everything under the sun & cracks on his own race just as much & as bad as he does any other race. People either love him or they hate him. He's certainly not for the faint at heart. I personally love his comedy!

I tend to agree with you. MOST good comedians are controversial, and the best comedy usually has at least a kernel of truth in it. Dave Chappelle is another black comedian who was an equal opportunity offender, and I just LOVED his TV show. My favorite funny guy right now is Daniel Tosh, and evidently, he pissed off women everywhere the other night, when he told a female heckler in the comedy club where he was performing that she needed to be raped by five guys. Too much? Probably so, but when you listen to people like Chris Rock or Daniel Tosh, don't expect clean or inoffensive jokes. These dudes aren't known for being politically correct! Thanks for your comments, MissCue! [I love the Wonder Woman avatar!]

You're welcome & you're right on. There's a bit Tosh does on women, something about we can't do what men do that I found absolutely hilarious & I'm sure many women were highly offended by it. I try not to take things too serious. The rape comment, was a tad overboard but as you said, that's Tosh, you just gotta expect it not like he truly wanted that too happen. Thank you, she's been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl :)

Yes, very true that people lack a sense of humor! That's why everyone is so uptight, they've forgotten how to laugh & take things (life) way too serious all the time. Yes of course we gotta take life serious to take care of responsibilities but not alllll the time. I wouldn't heckle Tosh nor any other comedian, that's just saying, "hey make an ass out of me in public" lol

Exactly! Many good comedians rely on shock value. They take a subject and make jokes about it that go above and beyond good taste. There is usually a kernel of truth in most good comedy. It's just that the funny men give a hyperbolic spin on the subject, and take things to a whole other level. Thanks for your response, Red!

What makes Chris Rock racist. It is true that When America won it's independence from Britain that there was still slavery in America. In fact the sitting president who signed the Declaration of Independence was a slave owner. Is it now racist to to tell the truth about America's history?

i teach united states history and constitution. what's taught in a classroom in no way encompasses the complete history of this country. do you know your history? what was the real reason behind segregation? did you learn that in your history class? in my humble opinion yes he was telling the truth. take a look at how certain demographical groups have been treated throughout this countries history. look at how african americans, asians, native americans, or hispanics have been treated historical then you tell me was he telling the truth.

You make a valid point. Conservatives seem to have a problem with black people talking about how unfairly they were treated in the past. Sure, that was then, and this is now, but Chris Rock WAS speaking the truth. Of course, the Republicans will accuse him of playing the race card. They're SO damn predictable! Thanks for your comments, mich52!

I happen to be a moderate in my politics, but I've noticed that it's the conservatives who are much less tolerant and spout vitriolic responses to those who don't agree with them 100%. It's sort of like they've assumed the old mantra of the Bush/Cheney regime: You're either with us, or you're against us. Most Republicans view the world only in terms of black and white, with no gray areas or complex though processes involved!
