Clint Eastwood Gives Strange RNC Speech: Did It Help or Hurt Romney?

It’s that time in the campaign when candidates are bringing out the big guns and trying to chalk up the very best celebrity endorsements. Obviously, President Obama has a slew of high-profile fans including the most likeable of Hollywood’s elite like George Clooney, Sarah Jessica Parker and Tom Hanks.

So far Mitt Romney’s list hasn’t been quite as impressive. Sure he has tough guy Chuck Norris on his side. But supporter Russell Crowe was an Australian citizen, and therefore ineligible to vote. And Scott Baio isn’t quite the draw he used to be during “Joanie Loves Chachi” days. But at Thursday’s Republican National Convention, it seemed liked Romney scored a major coup when Clint Eastwood showed up to officially get behind the candidate.

clint eastwood

But “Dirty Harry” quickly went off script and started addressing an invisible Obama in the form of an empty chair. Having one of the most beloved movie icons and former Mayor of Carmel, California, looked like it would be a slam dunk for the Romney-Ryan ticket. But Eastwood’s odd performance might have created too big a distraction from Mitt’s ultimate message. What do you think: Did Clint Eastwood help or hurt Romney's campaign?

Everybody is talking about it. Liberals hated it. If liberals hated it, it helped the Romney campaign.

We own this country. (That is all the people. Not just the liberals) The politicians work for us. If somebody is not doing the job, you gotta let them go.

What is so freaking hard to understand about that?

Actually, neither helped nor hurt, but it take did take some of the spot light away from Mitt, as people made too big a deal about Clint's presence.

“Libby”? Really? Have you seen ANY of my posts? And since you are speaking of “the real world”, did you turn your TV on at all, watch ANY news, or listen to a single talk radio show, either right or left, on Friday? EVERYone, was talking about Clint. EVERYone.

I believe it hurt because, whether you agree with his sentiment or whether it was true or not, the gop should try to appeal to the undecided voter. By using an eighty+ year old white man to speak on their behalf, they were only appealing to their base. It's not all that surprising that an old, wealthy, white male is supporting Romney.

It was to simple, Very Zen. Obama was there in Imagination. And What Mister Eastwood stated were all truisms, that if you listened struck deep into the caricature of Obama, no substance, no history and obviously lacking in substance.

Anything to take the mic away from the 2012 Republican ticket of Romney, Ryan & Akin helps out! The fact that the Republicans were scared and nervous when Eastwood stopped using his notes and free versing his speech, just shows that the Republican party can not come up with creative solutions. We need good solutions for the problems the USA is facing. 2012 will be yet another rePUBlican loosing battle for commander and chief. The chair is occupied. The republicans are busy talking to empty chairs. Not a good start...

Since John Wayne was unavailable, Clint is a good second choice... even if he is clearly not a great public speaker....the best was at the end, with the statement that we own this country, and the politicians are merely employees...

I really don't think it did anything. Romney and Ryan did themselves in with all the lies they told. Mitts foreign policy is crazy, talking about war with Iran and Russia.

What were their lies again? Must have missed them.

    Meanwhile Obama's foreign policy:

    • refusal to intervene in Syrian massacre,

    • refusal to stand behind Israel against the nuclear buildup in Iran,

    • defunding the U.S. military.

    • attempting to reduce U.S. nukes while the rest of the world proliferates them

    • assassinating U.S. citizens that he alone deems as terrorists

  • Paige jool 2012/09/04 16:59:37

He did mention Russia and Iran. And war mongrel John Mccain spoke of about five countries that he thinks we should intervene in.
  • jool Paige 2012/09/04 20:05:37

He didn't say anything about going to war with Russia and Iran, as you suggested. Intervene is not war my friend. Syria needs our humanitarian support, but we are letting people get slaughtered.

there are a few times when the gop go far down the rabbit hole, i feel sad for them. this is one of those times. i dont blame clint he is a fine actor and a old man, i am sure he meant well. i blame the mitt party and the gop! dont they review what someone is going to say before they get up there? why not? and someone should have stopped him, go to commercial, go up and get him in a fun way! i felt the same way the last time they picked sarah palin what an insult to all the fine good working women in the gop party, just insulting.

i dont like this as a democrat i find it offensive to make fun of a senior! its not his fault he is older and lacks good judgement. as adult children we need to protect our seniors sometimes from their selves. so all this nastiness directed at clint is unfair. hes an old guy, he must feel so embarrassed at this point why add to it? who should feel ashamed is the gop for not briefing his speech before hand, no excuse and mitt for laughing thru it, not funny

LMAO I am sure all his large piles of money are comforting him as we speak. I think ole Clint will make out fine. HE seems to get the scripts right that he gets paid big bucks for. Maybe if the GOP had paid him more, he would have made LESS sense and truly been a perfect represenative for the GOP LOL

Ashamed of the GOP. LMAO LOL I was ashamed of them long before this. Maybe now seeing how the GOP sold him down the river he will now vote DEM. I mean, if the GOP did that to him as per you. I can only imagine what they have in store for other seniors. Look how they treated Nancy after they were told she could not walk well. The GOP could care less. let's just show boat her out there.
