We won't see it until next year, but this teaser trailer is already giving us the chills.

This remake of the zombie classic was one of the first films to feature "fast zombies," and it was also our introduction to "300" director Zack Snyder...

  4. The Thing

    The Thing

Last year's remake was pretty good, but did you know that the 1982 horror classic was actually a remake of a 1951 film called "The Thing From Another World"?

  5. Let Me In

    Let Me In

This remake of Swedish cult favorite "Let The Right One In" also starred Chloe Moretz -- is she becoming the new Scream Queen?

  6. The Fly

The original was a bit of camp fun, but David Cronenberg's remake tackled some big ideas -- and turned a few stomachs.

  7. The Crazies

  8. I Am Legend

The book "I Am Legend" has actually been adapted three times -- but Will Smith's version is our favorite.

Chloe Moretz Stars in 'Carrie' Teaser Trailer: Best Horror Remake?

The remake of horror classic "Carrie," which will star Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, finally has a teaser trailer. The unsettling clip has already got us excited about Spring 2013; flip through our gallery and see how it stands up to some other great horror remakes.

The 1976 original, directed by Brian De Palma ("Scarface") and starring Sissy Spacek ("Badlands") as the titular bullied girl with telekinetic powers, was an adaptation of Stephen King's first novel and is generally considered to be one of the scariest films ever made. It's already been remade once as a TV movie in 2002, and it was even given a sequel in 1999 ("The Rage: Carrie 2").

Speaking to Coming Soon about "Carrie," which will be directed by Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don't Cry"), Moretz revealed that the film will be "darker and much more psychological" and will be more of an adaptation of the book than a remake. Adding that she's "actually not looking at the original," she said that the role will be a big change for her: "I'm becoming a totally different person for it. I'm letting go of all of my self-esteem issues and just kind of going into it."

Which do you think is the best horror remake?

Hollywood or wherever these movies come from need to get some new and more creative writers because 9 out of 10 times they will ruin a classic film by trying to remake it or keep trying to scare us with the same ole crap, like we really need 17 Paranormal Activity films or movies that have a pretty scary and creepy beginning but have a really stupid ending like 'The Strangers'. Seems like they just can't make good horror flicks anymore.

I typically don't look into remakes but this was the only one I saw.. with Will Smith. A great actor and director can make a "good" remake possible, and Will is one of the actors that can deliver! But our English/Film teacher only went through parts of Carrie, we read the book more and it seemed more effective because in the book, she was bigger while in the movie she was skinny. But still, typically I like to see originals left alone. The Miami Vice movie was a major disappointment and I didn't even see it

I am Legend was an OKAY (at best) movie but a terrible remake. It doesn't remotely resemble the original book! The crazies was good. I actually love how believable the plot is. Also, I liked that the "infected" weren't zombies. I thought Predators was a very good spin-off of the original.

Other great remakes are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House of 1000 Corpses, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm St...Just me. But I actually loved the modern feel. Since A Nightmare on Elm St. got deeper into the origins of Freddy, it should've been immediately followed by an up-to-date sequel.

"I am Legend" Gets my vote because Will Smith brought it home in his portrayal of the man desperate to find a cure for the virus! Fright Night was also a good remake, because of the way they were able to tell the same story, but with additional elements that made it into something different from the original! One that should have been included in this list is the 2010 remake of the cult classic "I Spit On Your Grave"

Ehh... the Fright Night remake isn't terrible. So see that if you haven't already.

Carrie, of course, had to be remade. The negative depiction of her crazy Christian mother is too tame for modern audiences, so they need to ramp that up to the expectation levels of modern haters.

Stephen King, the self-proclaimed Methodist, seems to have 'sold his soul' there. And it worked! Just saying.

Another remake. And the price to see this remake is a lot higher than the first film. I'll wait and rent the DVD.

There are no good remakes of any film for how can you improve a movie that was critically and publicly received with raves when it first came out? Don't waste your money -see the original

I hate to say it, but I actually like the remake of Dawn of the Dead more than the original. I guess if I had seen the original first it would've been the other way around, but the remake is a good movie.

I should point out that "Let Me In" isn't technically a remake. It was based on the same novel (from what I've heard) as "Let the Right One In." It's more or less a reboot or a second adaption. It's like how you wouldn't say Batman Begins is a remake of Batman '89 or the West movie. (Sorry...I get kind of picky about that sort of thing. I believe remake is specifically a movie based on another movie.)

Edit: Also, I am Legend and Carrie wouldn't be remakes, either.

Let Me In" fits the remake criteria because the original is the Swedish film"Let the Right One In", which was vastly superior to the Hollywood remake. And it's ok to say that you liked the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" more than the original, because I like the way the remake gave more depth to the characters, and how that film introduced the outbreak was way scarier to how it was shown in the original! "I Am Legend" is included because It's a remake of a Roger Corman classic that starred Vincent Price titled"The Last Man on Earth" I'm dreading the remake of "The Birds".I'm afraid that it will turn out to be another cheap imitation of the original, just like Gus Van Sant's terrible shot for shot copy of "Psycho". If they can't bring something new to the story, leave it alone!

Actually, Let the Right One In and Let Me In are both based on the same novel Let the Right One In. Not sure who the author is, though. I am Legend and Omega Man are both based on the novel I am Legend by Richard Matheson, so neither would technically be remakes since all four movies are based on their respective novels rather than previous films.

Hi Rebecca, as a fan of TCM,I can tell you that remakes were flying out of the studios back then far more than I knew! They might release a movie as a top tier movie, starring their "A" list actors, the re-release it as a "B" film featuring some of their lesser known performers, whom they were bringing along.

One of the first ones I recalled is one that starred James Stewart and Jean Arthur as young lovers who came from very different backgrounds. He was the son of a bank president and Arthur was his secretary. It was remade starring Van Johnson and June Allyson in the stead of Stewart and Arthur. I believe the one starring Stewart and Arthur was titled " You Can't Take it With You" it also had Charles Coburn playing Stewart's rich dad, also in that film was Eddie "Rochester" Anderson,Dub Taylor, Lionel Barrymore, and a host of other character actors who were very familiar in movies of that era."Bachelor Mother" was another movie that fits with that model. There was an earlier version made starring David Niven, and Ginger Rogers, and the remake starred Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds."Here Comes Mr. Jordan" has been remade twice as "Heaven Can Wait" ,I think?

I love the film You Can't Take it With You it was hysterical.Spring Byington really should have walked away with the Oscar.I just thought of a film that was originally called These Three starring Joel McCrea,Merle Oberon and Miriam Hopkins(God why aren't there any actors today that even come close? )in 1938 it was based on the Lillian Hellman play The Children's Hour and due to censorship, namely the Hayes Committee the characters were changed from two women caught up in a scandal to a man and two women. The remake starred Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McLaine and was true to the original play

Oh yes,Spring Byington was a hoot ,in that movie, wasn't she?I've watched "The Children's Hour starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and James Garner, and now ,looking at it with the eyes of an adult, I can see why children weren't admitted to see it,unless they were in the company of an adult, because even though the movie presrents it in an ambiguous way, it becomes readily apparent that MacLaine's character did have lesbian desires for Hepburn's character.

I'm not sure but I just thought of another classic that has been remade twice and is going to be remade again.I thank God that after some consideration Beyonce Knowles was taken off the list of the potential star. It's A Star is Born, originally made in 37? starring Janet Gaynor and Frederich March and then in 56?with Judy Garland and James Mason.I found both of those versions on par with the other, but the last one with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was a down right fiasco
  • Manster rebecca... 2012/10/23 15:35:11

I agree with you on that 100%! Kris Kristofferson, a rock 'n roll star? I doubt if that movie ever would have been done without Streisand using every bit of clout that she had,to get the right strings pulled! UGH! I really wish they wouldn't go for a fourth go around with that story, but again, we have someone using their clout. In this case it's Clint Eastwood. There are plenty of novels out there that should be getting some big screen consideration,so we don't have to keep going through the recycle bin, every 30 years or so.How many times have we seen a version of "Cinderella" put on screen? "Maid in Manhattan" "Pretty Woman" "Pygmalion" has been gnawed to the marrow,I think. "Jekyll and Hyde" "Dorian Gray",an on and on!If someone proposed doing a remake of Ishtar, I think they'd get tossed from the roof! LOL!

Carrie 2 was a sequel, not a remake, but yes, it didn't need to be made. There was a direct to TV remake that was based better on the novel, but I like the original. We'll see what the new one is like.

It's not much of a sequel though when it was made over 20 years later with a totally different cast and crappy story. A proper sequel would have been made just a few years later with the same cast and carry on from where they left off. I don't know what they were trying to do here.

It's probably best if we all just forget it ever happened. lol

yeah, I remember in the original Carrie, she was actually pushed to become a killer and you had sympathy for her, but in this knock off, there really is no sympathy for her, she was a terrorist killing innocent people... a suicide bomber had a much harder life and easier to feel sympathy towards than this character did. Her anger could have been worked out over a Starbucks Frappuccino with her mall buddies. Just an awful movie.

Actually, I felt more sympathy for some of those who died at the gym at her prom that wasn't involved in the prank, some of whom actually cheered for her when she walked on stage, but was shocked when the bucket of blood feel. Those that weren't killed by directly by Carrie's telepathic rage died because they were trapped in the gym as it burned down. Almost everyone, with the exception of Carrie's classmate who later became a school councelor (the one that felt remorse and asked her boyfriend to take her out) that got her head impaled through the door, well, I probably would have killed everyone in that house too.
