Who would have thought that 2012 was going to be the year of Channing
Tatum? Okay, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but the star who was once
considered nothing more than a less talented Josh Hartnett clone has
really had a fantastic start to the year with a supporting turn in
Steven Soderbergh's Haywire as well as his hilarious and charismatic performance in the surprisingly stellar 21 Jump Street (not to mention the box office success of The Vow). And with a small role in the upcoming blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation not to mention his starring turn in Soderbergh's Magic Mike, things are just heating up for the emerging talent.
Yes, it turns out Katey was right
and Tatum is really quite talented, and now I find myself interested in
following his career. The actor is already filming yet another movie
with Soderbergh (The Bitter Pill) and has a part in the next Bennett Miller movie(Foxcatcher) and now THR reports that Tatum is also in negotiations to star Roland Emmerich's action thriller White House Down.
While the Emmerich project might not have the same cache as Soderbergh's
or Miller's, it sounds like a solid blockbuster for Tatum's and should
keep his exposure as wide as possible. He should be careful selecting
projects at this point in his career, but a Die Hard-influenced
actioner is not necessarily a bad way to go. Of course, with Emmerich at
the helm there is some understandable worry, however, the filmmaker has
crafted his fair share of hugely successful blockbusters and all
without ever really tarnishing the image of his leading men.
It also doesn't hurt that White House Down is a priority at
Columbia since the studio hopes to get their film in theaters before a
similar competing project at Millennium - Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler and directed by Antoine Fuqua. Written by James Vanderbilt, White House Down
is set in the home of the president and pits an outmatched protagonist
against an occupying terrorist force. Should he sign on Tatum will play a
secret service agent and single dad stuck in the middle of a volatile
situation at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue who is tasked with saving the
president and the day. Columbia is hoping that White House Down will go into production this summer.
