Celebs Pose for 'Naked Truth': Helpful or Hypocritical?

Allure's "Naked Truth" issue isn't even out yet, and it's already being swamped with criticisms. Supermodel Heidi Klum, "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing, "Today" show correspondent Maria Menounos, "Talladega Nights" actress Leslie Bibb, Oscar-nominated Taraji P. Henson, and "Firefly" star Morena Baccarin each submitted themselves to nude photo shoots, and discuss body image. But critics argue the advice doesn't exactly hit home when it's coming from a supermodel.

The issue is supposed to help every day women build self-esteem, but in an excerpt Klum says, "I think you just have to be comfortable in your own skin ... I've never had a problem with my body and I don't really care what people think." Critics wonder how Allure expects to improve women's body image with naked pictures of larger-than-life celebrities. Could these testimonials from stars like Heidi Klum actually help every day women, or is it just a hypocritical publicity stunt?

If we actually had bodies like these supermodels, we probably wouldn't have issues.

No matter if a person is a celebrity or not we all have to learn to accept who we are and be comfortable in our own skin. I agree with Heidi Klum. You have to own it. Everyone has something they aren't happy with. Even celebrities. Which is why they pay thousands of dollars on plastic surgery. People should love themselves for who they are.

Show me a 50 or 60 plus woman who has gained 30 pounds in menopause and then it will make me feel better. But, showing me super young or really skinny women who starve themselves is not realistic at all to me. These women already have a great self image. I was beautiful and thin at their age too. Now, how about getting REAL people or older women??? Super models are about 5 ft. 10 and look lanky and gorgeous their entire lives....BUT..you don't see the beautiful women of yesteryear posing nude ( Like Jacklyn Smith etc.) because nobody wants to see their bodies AND they have too much class.. Real women don't have time to work out for several hours every day because
they are working all day to support their families and then they come home to tend to their kids and are too tired to do anything but put their feet up and go to sleep. Celebrities live a privilged life and their entire persona is about how they look. They can afford to hire a personal trainer and a personal chef. Why would I want to see a naked super model. It only makes me feel worse about getting older and gaining those few extra pounds. Sheesh! Life is hard enough without shoving skinny models in our faces. I think I look darn good for 62, but seeing these women makes me feel terrible. I feel really...

I think I look darn good for 62, but seeing these women makes me feel terrible. I feel really good about who I am and then when I see these girls, I have to admit, it makes me twinge a little and wish I were still young and thin again ......It is EASY to look good when you are under 50. THAT is not an accomplishment. It is called nature!!! Now, being confident and looking great without surgery over 50? THAT is something to celebrate!!! PLUS, celebs are always ten to 15 pounds thinner than normal because the camera adds weight. So they are totally not the norm anyway.

But I think it would work a lot better if the article had used people of various body types. All of the women listed have bodies that are considered ideal in this society. If you really want to raise self esteem and promote a positive body image, using people like this and completely excluding people of other shapes and sizes doesn't really help.

Do we really need to see more of what they already have out there? So they jump on the bandwagon of making the "teens" feel better for huge wads of cash which they scoff their carrot sticks and puff their cigarettes? Should I be impressed? Or just see it as more big noting?

Helpful, as long as the images aren't photo-shopped. I think it's meaningful to see that even supermodels and actresses have small flaws.

It shows the bias that is out there. In order to talk about self esteem they get some of the prettiest ladies that they could find. That shows that the paper really cares about body image . I mean why not have Kathy Bates or Gabourey Sidibe (Precious). These are people who have really had to face issues with body image.

...and purely from the sense that it still perpetuates the ideology of looking to (and accepting) the reality that is someone else contrasted against yourself...if they wanted to boost "body image" (which is something that I disagree is even necessary in the first place), they'd replace the photo of every woman, man or child with a full page reflective mirror.

Grace to you, Glory to God!

My question is, are the photos "real" - as in straight out of the camera - or have they been as heavily retouched as most supermodel/celebrity pictures that appear in magazines?

If the former, it might be helpful to see that even the "supermodels" have "flaws" just like the rest of us.

On the other hand, if they pull this kind of crap ...

Doesn't really bug me, I'm happy with my body. However I've got some less happy friends who worry about weight. I don't see how showing them photos of women whom have personal trainers and diet consultants on speed dial and saying "Hey, they're comfortable in their skin, why aren't you?" will help. First of it will be taken as implying that these women look less then perfect, and have some body issue to worry about being naked for.
So imagine what less statuesque girl will think of themselves.
Second, it's not actually addressing the real issue. All it's doing is giving boys something they can sneak into the house without their mother getting angry and showing girls naked women with a "feel better, also, try looking like this" note attached.

Done strictly to sell more magazines. People aren't buying them anymore; they're considered a luxury in a Depression and no one can afford to buy what is in them either. I'm not interested in seeing naked women and if men want to, they'll buy skin mags, not fashion mags.

Hypocritical or not, I don't see how seeing other people being happy with their bodies is going to make anyone feel better about their own bodies. Seeing people who are bigger, smaller, or the same size as me being happy and confident with their bodies has never made me feel any better about my own.

Models like that usually do make people feel more insecure. I mean come on! They are standing there all dolled up telling people to not be so insecure :P. That is why I respect Demi Lovato! She did feel insecure and she took it out on herself, but she rebounded and did what she had to do to get better. That is why I think she is a way better role model than most other celebrity teenagers :p

The whole issue of female self-esteem was caused by hollywood, and seeing airbrushed, makeup wearing models likely won't help make it any better.

seeing all these confident women posing naked & saying that they've never had issues with their bodies would only make insecure girls more insecure and make them ask "Why can't I be this confident & comfortable in my own skin?". trust me, I would know -_-
