There may have been widespread outcry from fans after the news broke that Beyonce lip-synched her way through her performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" during President Obama's Inauguration on Monday, but many celebrity singers have now come out in her defense.

Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul herself, says she laughed when she heard the news, and explained to ABC News that "I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather...” she told ABC News. “When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record."

Jennifer Lopez told the Daily Show that "Sometimes it happens when you are in certain stadiums and certain venues and things, they do pre-record stuff because you're going to have that terrible slapback."

British singer Myleene Klass took to Twitter to say "I don't get what's outrageous about lip-syncing to your OWN vocals?" But former "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler had the most convincing argument: "Beyonce's so hot she can do anything. Let's just get real." Do you think it's a big deal that Beyonce was lip-synching?

Yes, i do. But she is a liberal and an obama worshipper so SHE will get a pass.

Remember the scandal when Ashley Simpson dared to lip synch on the SNL show? WELL< look at the story now, a celeb lipping the words at the highest event in the nation. What a POS.

She's not the first one, and I am sure she won't be the last. What I find ironic is how is this even considered news worthy? We got so much other stuff going on in the world that people need to know about and the news keeps reporting on BS like this.

If it were a concert I would be very upset. But, at an venue such as this, you hear your voice coming back at you in such a way it's confusing. Lip-synching (to her own voice) means we are certain to hear a beautiful rendition.

I couldn't care less about anything so inane. Now if she sang it live and butchered it or mocked it (ala Roseanne Barr) THEN I would definitely care.

She couldn't do it live because she doesn't know the words. And I'll bet that obama doesn't know them either.

The accompaniment follows the singer. She didn't really need to rehearse.

No big deal. Beyonce did a very fine job. The result was excellent and will be referred to for years to come. On the other hand, maybe she was just trying to be consistent with the way the Obama admin does everything.

I think this was actually good planning. The Star Spangled Banner is pretty difficult to sing, so the fact that Beyonce was able to record an excellent rendition is to her credit. I'm sure they used the "perfect" version for this occasion rather than risking having a kerfuffle happen during a "live" performance.

Another incorrect selection meant to be NO BIG DEAL AT ALL! These pitiful limited options fail to include, "Ifin we could care less, we would!" 'Bee-On-Say-Ence' is an affront to stuff our faces where we do NOT wanna be! The media attention here will probably incite someone to visit a theater with murder in mind! Even the internet couldn't calculate how contemptible this subject. keyrap on a biscut

Musicians should never lip sync. Of course they would have to be a real musician first. Just because a person makes money from playing music doesn't mean that they are a musician. A real musician honors those who came before them as well as their fans. Those who have gone on stage and given their best, whether they succeed or fail, don't cheat others. They are to honor their audience. One should never deceive their audience but only give them what is real, honorable, and truthful. From the heart and soul. It might be called "keeping it real, dog". Funny but the American Idol contestants do better at it then some of the "pros". At least we know that they're honestly taking the risk of failure. This is close to my heart because I am a real musician.

Aretha Franklin herself sounded like a hot mess when she sang in cold conditions. Would it be an even bigger scandal had Beyonce lost her voice half way through the song because it was too cold?
  • kela.stein sally 2013/04/04 12:14:00

actually it would be a godsend if she lost her voice, then we wouldn't be assaulted by her banshee like voice and stolen dance moves that when they are pointed out as stolen she they were a tribute.

That particular venue was under the jurisdiction of inaugeration officials.
And what they say goes. And if they wanted Beyonce or anyone else
performing at that inaugeration to lipsynch rather than voice live, then
she and the rest of her fellow artists are prettymuch compelled to comply
with said offficials requirements. I just hope that those officials had a very
good reason for tabooing any live performance. Be they Beyonce Knowles
    or any other artist.

For many reasons, many famous singers (of various political affiliations) have done exactly this, with this song, at major events, to a recording of their own voice.

    It's her singing.

It's not like she was lip-syncing to the wrong song.

It's not like she's pulling a Milli Vanilli.

She can sing better than anyone on this thread who would criticize her.

Or, better yet, let's not hear her at all. lol... I, for one, would never miss her. I just don't think people should get all upset about the lip-synching, though it is their choice to do so.

As far as I'm concerned, it really doesn't matter whether it's live or Memorex; her music is entirely too lame for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I think she's hot as hell she's probably a very intelligent woman, but to me all pop music sucks.

I meant to put "no". Singers do this all of the time. After all, it was her own recording, and it did not sound auto-tuned at all. Also, the weather thing is a pretty big deal. I live in a humid city and when my choir went to sing in New Mexico, everyone sounded like crap because it was so dry outside.
