Carly Rae Jepsen continues to break records, as this week marks her ninth time in the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 for her hit song, "Call Me Maybe." Nine weeks is the longest run for any artist in the US this year; Jepsen beat out Gotye who held the previous record at eight weeks for "Somebody That I Used To Know."

We love the oh-so-catchy pop song, but we've got to wonder: Despite the rise of indie music and the backlash against pop stars like Jepsen or Bieber, is catchy music still king?

Pretty dumb question IMO...whether the style of music is bubblegum pop, reggae, rap, indie, hard rock or anything else, one has to find it "catchy" to prefer it over other styles/genres...was bubblegum/commercial pop implied by the term "catchy" in this question?

I prefer lyrics and instrumentation over if it is catchy. Not every catchy tune makes it so I rather listen to the ones that could have been up there. Lastly, I do not suffer from S.P.S. like most listeners. As for king or queen, none.

I actually had never heard this song until a few minutes ago when I googled it. Needless to say I had low expectations seeing as though it's a pop song, but this managed to fall short of nearly nonexistent expectations. Seriously. When will people start writing real music again?
There's nothing catchy about this. I couldn't even finish listening to the thirty second itunes preview.

Melodic music produced by musicians will retain its edge over unmelodic tracks assembled by non-musicians using computer software. "Beats and rhymes" tracks are melody-challenged, as are too many EDM tracks.

Melody is catchy. Without melody, rap is just poetry. Without melody, EDM is just beats and loops.

There is catchy music in every genre... Sometimes I find that really catchy music, I like a lot at first but then the song will get old fast - and sometimes a song that I grow to love, I actually end up liking more...

Of all the classical pieces, Pachelbel's "Canon in D", is one of the most well known, and it's very catchy! It was a one hit wonder...
