It's the first day of the Cannes Film Festival, people. That means movie stars and film enthusiasts alike are basking in the French Riviera sun while dabbling in a bunch of independent movies.
The Washington Post suggests a handful of independent flicks worth keeping track of at the Cannes Film Festival, including "Midnight in Paris" (a Woody Allen film), "The Tree of Life" (starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn) and "This Must Be the Place" (starring Sean Penn -- yeah, he gets around.)
I used to until I realized that they were no longer entertainment, but just new forms of political propaganda. On the rare occasion that I find one that's purely entertainment, like Reservoir Dogs or Fargo, I still like them.
It seems the only way to get a unique plot.. that doesn't follow the Hollywood formula of "what sells" is to see an independent films.. I remember one called something about 2 couches .. or something like that it starred Juliette Binoche and William Hurt. Did anyone ever hear of this one.. a psychiatrist in New York (Hurt) and a dancer in Paris decide they need a vacation.. and they put their homes up in an ad and they don't know each other but they end up exchanging homes to get away for a bit. .. ends up Hurt's patients don't know that BInoche isn't a shrink.. and they start telling her their problems.. and she is pretty good although she isn't a certified shrink .. and BInoche's lovers keep bothering Hurt and he tries to enjoy his break.. and he starts counseling them.. it was a good one..

I prefer them but now it is starting to get silly with big name actors staring in independant movies. Sadly, it is another genre that may be getting watered down.
About as much as eating my own vomit. What a bunch of self absorbed, approval seeking twits. I've never seen an independent film worth the time to watch
I love indies man. As much as I like the commercially successful movies, Indies have a greater artistic merit. It's like all the situations of the characters is that much more magnified. It hits you like lightening and makes you feel.
I love independent films, because most of them are much smarter, thoughtful and intelligent than the usual movie theater fare. If you want gazillion-dollar budget flicks, with car chases and stuff exploding and all kinds of special effects, go see a blockbuster at your local Imax. If you want to see a low-budget movie with great stars and meaningful plot and dialogue, then independent films are for you. Also, most of these little movies receive high critical acclaim.
With Independent movies many times we can get something other than the canned, 3 scene, corporate Hollywood production. Some of them of course are just crap, but overall I tend to look closer at Independents.
Some of the best and most original films I have ever seen were first seen either in Cannes or Sundance. Is nice to see what people can do when free of the bottom line and the popularity contest that is Hollywood...
"The Hero of Time" was an independent fan film from BMB finishes. It epitaphs why I like independent films. It's not all about the money at that stage. It's more about making the movie. Hollywood will put out any crap to make money *cough* twilight *cough*.
