Can you honestly tell me that you care about lyrics in a song?

You!

Or do you just listen for the music? To me, it feels like some people just listen to music on command. Without really trying to understand it. In their heads they think what they listen to is good enough, but they may care for it more if they try to look at the lyrics.

I'd also like to add that, it seems like everyone just listens to something because of what it is. They like it but it becomes old after awhile. They neglect other music though because they think it's rubbish. Well none of those people try hard enough to listen. Either that or they just don't have the time.

but at first it will be the rhythm, beat and melody which will catch my ear.

    Both parts are very important.

Half of my music is foreign or instrumental anyway. I don't usually listen to the lyrics until many times later. It just doesn't occur to me to pay attention most of the time.

There are some pretty awesome songs (even really twisted ones) once you listen to the lyrics
    ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?...
    (it's in german) lyric translations:

also, there are songs by my favorite artists or bands that I just can no longer listen to because some of the lyrics are sub par. For instance, I absolutely love rise against, but I find it so hard to listen to their song "audience of one" because one of the lyrics is "we're all ok, until the day we're not", and while i like the rest of the song, I generally avoid it

    Well, I do both.

There are some songs that sound good, but the lyrics aren't that well-written.

There are some songs with great lyrics, but the sound of cats caterwauling sound better.
    :-D

I guess for me, the sound will initially draw me in and when the lyrics are great, it makes the song more special.

Yes, I will admit that I do listen to the lyrics. It is not an end all to a song with a great beat, but I do pay attention. Sometimes it is simply because I like to sing to it. Music can be used to address many moods, or set the scene for whatever moment you are in, and the lyrics can play a part. Example could be "Let's Get it On", lol. Or maybe "Sandman, bring me a dream...." lol. Oh, or maybe "By the Rivers of Babylon". Really to many to set and address the mood you are in.....

I actually pay attention to the music, the lyrics matter as much as the sound.

In this case, lyrics trump the sound (the vocals anyway), but they're supposed to in this instance.

Music is as meaningful as someone wants it to be.Sometimes I think musicians take their selves way too seriously, Some spew their political beliefs couched in entertainment. I have abandoned some artists as a result.

Sometimes, most all the time, it is how we interpret it, but then the only person or group that really knows is the artist.

Certainly! It bothers me when I do not understand the meaning of a song...
I can't understand why people can just ignore the lyrics which may be the most important part!

I think that even if a song sounds like crap, good lyrics can make me still listen to it

Yea, I'm like that too sometimes. In a way it's either the music for fun or the words for my mind. Both together are what I want. Not all music is perfect for what they are.

Well sometimes you find a few songs that have both, and that's when it becomes more than a song. It turns into a sort of link to a memory or emotion. That's what's great about music
