Can Tom Hanks' Son Make It as a Rapper?

Will Smith's daughter found a comfortable spot in the music world, and she was only 9 years old. How hard could it be for Tom Hanks' college-aged son to make it as a rapper?

Probably a lot harder than he thinks.

Chester Hanks, AKA Chet Haze, is apparently an aspiring rapper. He released his first single, "White and Purple," this Tuesday (see below).

Before you scream "ZOMG!" it is a remix of Wiz Khalifa's tune "Black and Yellow."

In it, Haze raps about typical college fare -- "hittin' blunts after hittin' books" and "tryin' to get up under that blouse." Since he's currently a frat boy at Northwestern, that seems appropriate enough.

But how does the music stand up?

As of this writing, the YouTube video for "White and Purple" has only gotten about 300 views, and Chet's pretty much breaking even on "likes" and "dislikes."

Check out the song below and let us know what you think.

but he can always do it for the love of expression - he actually has some skills and talent - I like the track on the video - but i don't think it's enough to make it big.

yeah the original is better - no doubt. I rap - so don't act like I'm evaluating him without any experience. I'm 41 - been rapping since 16 - I copy no one - but for someone who was inspired by another artist - chet haze is at least smooth in his delivery and spittin from his own perspective. Here's summa my work http://www.soundclick.com/ban... - I do for expression - and summa my spit on one of my son's beats CHECK ON http://www.soundclick.com/ban...

No one will see him as a serious rapper. He's Tom Hank's son. That does not scream "gangsta" ya know?

Ima just say yes, because there are rappers and singers out there who can't sing a lick and their lyrics suck, so you'll never know.

First, I think he should have performed something more original. Second, I don't think his voice lends itself well to rap. Third, he could try something more difficult, like singing a melodious song (about college life) without all the insults to women ("tryin' to get up under that blouse.") Hasn't this generation had enough with sex, fornication and adultery? Personally, I would have expected something more refined (?) from Tom Hanks' family; I'm disappointed.

Also, after reading some of the other opinions, I agree with the idea that Chet might be better in the acting field. He certainly does seem to have the looks! Why not persue acting with the same name, Chet Haze? Make it on his own. Maybe, as he matures from the college/kid/frat mentallity, he may even develop a better tonality to his voice. Who knows?

I think acting would be a better idea for him,
he has the face and a good teacher (his dad)
and will smith's daughter did not even write her own song , soulja boy did. It was all over the raidio.

By the way, Willow is only famous cause of her daddy any nine year old could come up with the music she has. It might be harder for Tom Hanks' son because Tom hanks is mostly in acting but people will listen simply because he is Tom Hanks' son and then they will decide if they like the music and if they don't like Tom Hanks they will most likely not like Tom Hanks' son's music.

Yes, of course. In my opinion he needs little talent to be a rapper because I believe most rap is crap.

I can tell you don't listen to rap. If by rap you mean what you hear on the radio and in videos, then I agree, but there are alot of extremely talented lyricists in the underground market, but apparently it doesn't sell. Thats why all the crap on the radio sounds exactly the same. It's because thats all thats being allowed to be played on radio.
  • Tom synistah 2011/01/13 14:08:41
    Tom
I am bound to the confines of radio and that is what has lead me to my view that rap is crap. I have little doubt you may well be correct about talented lyricists in the underground rap market.
  • synistah Tom 2011/01/13 14:12:27
    synistah
I figured as much. I'm not attacking you though. I'm just a little upset that a very creative art has been reduced to a product. Underground hip hip is not based on nothing but death, drugs, sex, etc, but thats what sells :(
  • Tom synistah 2011/01/13 14:20:32
    Tom
I understand. Mainstream rap is not my type of music for the reasons you clearly note in your reply. I do not feel attacked by you, rather I concur that you probably are accurate about rap being something other than crap. The problem I have, and sadly many people have, is that we are only exposed to the mainstream prime time radio rap.

Yeah, that makes me even more mad knowing about those who make truly good music with morals, and lessons who are kept just below the surface.

Personally, I don't really like rap. Only Nicki Minaj has caught my eye, but that's a whole different story. Anyway, my little brother and his friends listen to this stuff...so I'm sure he'll do well with his audience of 12 year olds.

    But I'm thinking:
caught eye story brother friends listen audience 12 year olds
