Can the 49ers Make the Super Bowl?

As we covered here before on SodaHead Sports, the San Francisco 49ers have seen a rebirth this NFL season. For as memorable as they were in the '80s and '90s, the team was just as forgettable in the early 2000s, with no playoff appearances after 2002. However, that's all changed in 2011. The 49ers are 11-3, NFC West champions, and are guaranteed a playoff spot with homefield advantage for their first postseason game.

If the 49ers win their last to games and the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers slip, they could get homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. They are 7-1 at home at Candlestick Park. Despite numerous power outages and a tough opponent in the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 49ers dominated them on Monday Night Football, cruising to a 20-3 win. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played hurt and couldn't handle the 49ers defense, throwing three interceptions. Roethlisberger's thoughts on the 49ers' performance? “I was probably the best 49er tonight,” Roethlisberger said to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

The more they keep winning, the more the confidence of the 49ers grows. A very good team with homefield advantage, youth, and confidence could be a nightmare for the NFC come playoff time. The question before the season was whether the 49ers could make the playoffs. If they keep on rolling into the playoffs, the question might be whether they get to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1994.

they have the talent to beat green bay, it looks as if theyve got the 2 seed, so they would only have to play one away game at most

It's possbile, but looking like all roads go through Green Bay right now. Perhaps the Cowboys can get a defense and join the big boys over the next couple years.

The road to the Super Bowl goes through Green Bay... in January. Green Bay has gone through the equivalent of an entire season, including a Super Bowl win, undefeated.

They had one bad day. My guess is they didn't like it.

Come on with your bad self! LOL!

There are several teams that could make the super bowl, and San Fran is one of them.

While I think the Packers are most likely team to go to the Super Bowl from the NFC, if they could lose to the Chiefs, they could certainly lose to the 49ers or the Saints.

On a better day with Jennings back and the OL in shape, they can't be beat. They lost to the Chiefs because Nelson, Driver and Finley couldn't open to get the ball. This was caused by Jennings not being there to alleviate some of the pressure off the receivers.
  • Bunk11 James 2011/12/22 18:21:17
    Bunk11
Well, since Jennings may be out for a bit more, they could still lose. Even with Jennings back, if they could lose to the Chiefs without him, they can lose to better teams with him. No team is unbeatable. I still think the Packers will likely win the NFC, but there is certainly a chance for the Saints or 49ers.
  • James Bunk11 2011/12/22 20:14:55
    James
Nah, the only reason they lost without him is because the Cheifs were using man to man and since they didn't have Jennings they were one man short...well that one man was the difference between receivers being open and receivers being covered. You can't throw to a covered receiver...unless you're Rodgers... : ) Even then though, he's running a risk. I've been reading some articles and if you watch the Bears game, you'll see a definite spark from the Packers!
  • Bunk11 James 2011/12/26 04:33:45
    Bunk11
Well, the Bears were without Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, so that game wasn't a big surprise. On any play, there are 5 receivers whether Jennings is in the game or not. To say the Packers can't win without Jennings suggests that they are definitely beatable, even with him.
  • James Bunk11 2011/12/26 05:29:23
    James
Well..... Rodgers threw for 5 TDs.... they picked off the QB like what? 2,3 times? They showed tonight that they CAN win without Jennings so this is good! The Pack is back!

As I said initially, I think the Packers are the most likely team to go to the Super Bowl from the NFC. It is *possible* for either the Saints or the 49ers to beat them, though. A solid performance against the Bears given their injuries and the way they've been playing the last few weeks doesn't say much either way.

They can but I think they will go to the NFC Championship game and lose to the Packers. They will get a bye the first week of the playoffs though because they only need to win out for that to happen and they got 2 easy games against Seattle and St. Louis.

    Packers . . . Saints . . . Falcons

The 9ers currently have zero playoff experience. The Falcons have it and the Saints and Packers are former Super Bowl Champions. The 9ers will have to get by at least two of those three teams. I don't see it happening.

I don't think they will make the superbowl.

I would like to see the Saints at the superbowl again, but also not convinced that will happen either.

If their defense can stop Green Bay and/or New Orleans. If they only have to play one of those two, their odds are much better.
