Can Kinect Teach You Kung Fu?

Up until now, the Xbox 360 Kinect motion-sensing hardware has mostly been a medium for kitchy dance-offs, sports mini-games, and a few lackluster action titles. But Kinesthetic Games is ready to turn the system on its head, possibly with an upper chest grapple and sweeping kick. We're not sure. We haven't played "Kung Fu Superstar" yet. Whatever the case, the Kinect stakes are rising.

According to Kotaku, "Kung Fu Superstar" will tell the tale of young Danny Cheng as he learns the art of Kung Fu and attempts to become an international martial arts stuntman. That would be pretty straight-forward if it was a typical controller-based game, but since this is played with Kinect, that means you'll actually be learning Kung Fu along with Danny. Even if the game doesn't live up to expectations, it's a fascinating step in a new direction.

No more than eating an apple can teach you about having an apple orchard. It may be able to teach you how to fight using some moves, but I think that's about it.

As a student of Hsing-I, I can say for certain, one will not become a Kung-fu expert from any game or book. You might learn some clever tricks. But you will not have developed internal 'chi'. Which requires a great deal of repetitive exercise and breathing techniques. Along with knowledge of forms and the 5 elements; their functions and purpose.

I don't think that a video game is the best way to teach the martial arts - mostly because they often omit the spiritual aspect. Want to learn martial arts - go to a martial arts dojo.

    He has Arsenio hands.

Still kinda cool. May be more exercise worthy. Still would learn more Kung Fu than sitting on the couch with a quart of ice cream.

    Not even close.

Yes, it can teach you some basics. But, it can't see when you've done something wrong and correct you. And, as a former martial artist, I can tell you those fine points make a big difference. If, for example, your hand and wrist aren't in the right position when you punch someone, you've broken them.

More importantly, you are never in any danger of actually getting hit & you're not getting used to pain.

People who want to learn martial arts should be getting off their butts and doing it. The physical fitness, mental alertness, calm, integrity and spirituality of martial arts can never be found in a game.

Possibly. However, the failing is that the knowledge of the "moves" will not come along with the philosophy, or anything. They'll learn to go through the motions, but none of what actually goes into it.

It does not have the ability to show you mpre than a few basic maneuvers. Kung Fu is a spiritual thing too, and a physical fitness type thing.

It would need to be a dvd that uses linect to have any real chance. Even then, you'd lack the spiritual growth having other real live students and an instructor who can converse with you would award.

and No. . .the moves, but it's a contact sport. Twisting a person and hurting them is different in real life. It would be a tool in learning the moves.

I see many hit detection errors in the future unless they work their asses off, which hasn't happened a lot in recent years. Plus, I took three years of actual martial arts training. Sparring with digital NPCs is WAY different than sparring with an actual person, another thing I've learned in my years of training. Plus, I don't see this as being very successful when taking on multiple opponents from in front and behind, and especially with the jump attack at the end.

I think it would be able to teach someone the motions, however it will never teach actual combat because there is no physical person to fight.
