Can Houston Overcome Injuries?

The Houston Texans are 9-3, in the midst of a franchise-record six game winning streak, and look to be on pace to capture their first playoff berth and AFC South division title in franchise history. Oh, they also keep winning without their starting quarterback, franchise defensive player Mario Williams, and may be without their star wide receiver Andre Johnson. Who said life or the NFL season was fair?

Despite injuries to both starting quarterback Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart, rookie/third-string quarterback T.J. Yates did a very solid job on Sunday, in a win over a talented Atlanta Falcons team. Yates went 12 for 25, good for 188 passing yards and one touchdown. The Texans' top-ranked defense capitalized on two costly interceptions by Atlanta's Matt Ryan en route to victory.

Andre Johnson left the game with a left hamstring injury, but told HoustonTexans.com it is nothing near as bad as his similar injury earlier in the season. Johnson's teammates and Texans' fans can only hope he will have a speedy and healthy recovery in time for the playoffs. Luckily, the Texans still have Pro Bowl-caliber running back Arian Foster, who rushed for 111 yards and one touchdown on 31 tries on Sunday. Backup running back Ben Tate has also shown he can take over a game at times and rushed for 41 yards on Sunday as well.

With the Texans tied with New England and Baltimore at 9-3 in the AFC, home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and a much-needed bye week is still within reach. Texans head coach Gary Kubiak definitely deserves some Coach of The Year votes for this 2011 campaign."It's a great win," Kubiak said, following the Texans' hard-fought 17-10 win over Atlanta. "...because of everything this team has been through." And boy, have they been through a lot.

I think they have the potential to beat anyone in the AFC. Their defense is playing lights out and their running game is strong. Yates just needs to show he's serviceable to keep 8 guys out of the box. If he can do that, they've got a shot.

I agree that they wouldn't have a chance against Green Bay in the Super Bowl. I also wouldn't like their chances on the road in New England, Baltimore, or Pittsburgh.

They should get far enough to get beat down by Baltimore or New England in the divisional round of the playoffs.

I'll give you Baltimore (the only team that has really beaten the Texans this year), but New England? No way, not against the "Steer Curtain" D.

I am just pointing out the likely home teams for the divisional round. Both are hard to beat at home.

The Patriot Defense is terrible on the secondary - But Something Tells me Tom Brady will be able to drop 24-38 points on that Texan defense. So that turns it into a nice 'shoot out' Tom Brady vs .. Yates ?

Next man up. The miracle season for the Houston Texans. How many times have they been counted out this season, including before the season started? They simply keep amazing people especially the teams they are playing.

Yates is going to do just fine. He has one of the best running games to lean on with a double-threat in Foster/Tate. The #1 defense (The Steer Curtain) to keep the score low on the other side and Andre Johnson might just miss 1 game, giving him his deep threat.

Warren Moon likes T.J Yates better than Leinart anyway.

Its going to most likely go through either Pittsburgh , Maryland , or Foxboro (MA) And all 3 of those teams the Steelers , Ravens , and Patriots can beat the Texans if they dont have a QB. And Im sorry but even when Cinci is being cinci and losing games they should win.. Theres no way that offense beats those 3 above teams in a playoff atmosphere. They have all been there before. 2 of them are Multiple superbowl champions / MVPS .. And im sorry but Yates .. on 4th and whatever with the game on the line.. thats a whole different level in the playoffs then in the regular season. So while its a possibility. To deny the above as the most probable is also to be in total denial. So is attempting to demean superbowl championship teams.

If Shaub was still in, and your big Two were not a Big one (injuries) They would probably be the #1 seed , but I dont' see that happening either - I may be wrong but theres no superbowl this year for the Texans. But earnestly I am happy their fans finally get to see them in the playoffs. Next year they may be the team to beat in the division who knows.

Um What about them? I did enjoy Fire man ed looking like he was going to cry during the the Patriots series sweep, but that aside you make no sense. Nor do you even attempt to counter any points - so ill just take that as the fact that you can't. And if the Jets don't beat the Eagles (maybe they will maybe they wont) Dolphins (probably will) and Giants (Probably wont as they are a better team with a real QB) lose 2 and they dont see the post season, they have a weaker defense than last year and the offense has never been the strong suit. Though I suppose perhaps thats what Houston needs to face the Jets the one team that might make the playoffs besides the Broncos the Texans in their current state can beat. (yes im counting the Raiders and Chargers out)

T.J. Yates is playing well. If Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walters step up they will be fine. I have a feeling once the playoffs roll around they will use Ben Tate even more. Punishing teams on the ground with Tate And Foster will give Yates a break with throwing all the time.

In the AFC... (Goes to wiki AFC) probably the Steelers. The Texans have way to many injuries to stand up against the previous SB contenders... ya never know though, this IS football so anything can happen...

Green Bay's defense is not that great. You need both to win a superbowl. Greenbay offense is like the Colts, nothing without their QB.

The Texans most likely will not make it to the SB because of injuries, but GB is not repeating this year.

Yeah, you're right about the Defense, but the Offence.. is nothing without the Receivers as you would have seen in the 3rd n 4th quarter of the Giants game where the receivers kept dropping the ball. I'm getting tired of the "the team is nothing without their QB" statements because you can't have a team period without a QB. -.-

Green Bay WILL repeat. When Capers says he's going to fix something, he will fix it.

There is no question or argument that the Green Bay offense is not powerful, but no one has ever won a Super Bowl with a weak defense. Ask Buffalo.

The Green Bay defense was not ranked 30th (might be 32nd after the Giants game) last year.

Houston is an example of a team that can win without a QB. Matt Schaub himself is a fill in and will never be one of the great QB's, but he plays his role to a tee in the Houston offense. Just like Yates will.

If GB lost Rogers, they would not continue to win games.. not when other teams are scoring 35-40 against you.

I am waiting for GB to play a real defense. Houston won't get a chance until a possible Superbowl, but GB won't make it passed a real defense when they play the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

(You do remember what Capers did in Houston, right?)
