Can Fiona Apple Make a Comeback?

Fiona Apple was 19 years old when she won a Grammy for her 1996 single "Criminal," but each album she's released since then has taken longer to come out. Her last album, "Extraordinary Machine," was released in 2005, and according to Spinner she hasn't even played a show outside of Los Angeles in five years. But she's finally coming out of the woodwork again, and in preparation for her next album, Apple performed an anticipated set at SXSW.

The set was predictably odd, eliciting surreal reviews. At one point she apparently yelled, "You're imaginary, you're all in my head! You're not real!" And it wasn't even a lyric. Her next album, modestly titled "The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do," is scheduled to come out some time this June. Do you think Fiona Apple can make a proper comeback?

I loved fiona and her wierd, trippy psychadelic videos back in the day. it's hard to say if she can make a comeback or not but the fact that adele is popular gives me hope for other talented singers that don't fit the katy perry/lady gaga/ britney spears/rihanna mold.her screaming YOUR NOT HERE was a little freaky though. okay, alot freaky!

No. She needs help. Her talent is huge, but she needs help managing her emotional/behavioral difficulties.

Her emotional issues are a big part of her musical talent.

Agree! She needs to learn how to live with those emotions with a more deft hand, not allow them to mow her down completely...to where she cannot perform onstage, or take care of her business-end of her contracts, such as writing, arranging, etc.

I think she has it in her.

Should it not catch; makes no difference to me.

Her music has always been relevant to my personal tastes. Love Apple!

Wow, i fell in love with not just this but almost ALL Beatles hits, now that is a band that in 10 years had more hits that anyone, Michael Jackson or Madonna, Whitney, Mariah etc..this cover, not only she didn't "make it her own" haha ok, she respected the original but a masterpiece like this needs to be made diferent, to sing it the same and like you're bored or in a trance, why i don't get it.. i respect you love it but i was surprised, no ofense her staring like that, that's so 90's! lame, old, oh you're so in trance! oh you don't care about being the opposite the ridiculous Madonna copy cat Lady Gagme, but this is the other extreme, it makes no sense, not appealing, ugh

yeah well, i loved her with Criminal..but looking at the vid even then...don't you think there is something wrong there...NTM she looked anorexic then for sure..she had a drug problem..it shows even more in her behavior..what a waste of beauty talent & opportunity..!

But then she also try this a few years back? So far though I still like her first song[if it was the first] 'Criminal'

that's it, i loved that song, it had movement, it had energy, clever lyrics, lyricism so appealing, she looks like a junkie but i liked the song...no other song of her ever reached that super hit feeling..this is why she went back to drugs i guess, still is clearly!

OMG i can barely watch this! she's emaciated, her face super pretty but already this whole BS is old, tired..."crying naked on the kitchen floor" later on, Natalie Imbruglia...Amy Whinehouse.. and looks very contrived! ugh..i think she gained a very small audience with this song/video and well..that audience is now..i don't know Occupy Wall Street? not buying records anymore HAHA..no, she's over..she was over then..and nothing looks like a re-start

"When The Pawn Hits" is a far better collection of songs than her first album "Tidal".

Don't you have to have had something in order to stage a "comeback"? I don't remember anything else from her besides Criminal.

You probably don't remember anything but "Criminal" because you probably never made an independent decision regarding music in your life. Therefore, if you didn't hear a song on MTV or the radio, it didn't exist in your world.

Personally, "Criminal" is one of my least favorite Fiona Apple songs.

I get it... you like Fiona Apple, I'm glad she "floats your boat". I simply expressed an opinion and you turned into a personal attack on how I choose my music. I have made independent choices on my music in my life, thank you very much. I stopped watching MTV in the late 80's and I listen to quite a variety of radio, from "talk" to "top 40" to "underground" etc... Fiona isn't my "type" of music, but I'm glad for her that she has followers, more power to you! But please take your trolling somewhere else, I do not wish to get into an on-line pissing contest.

My criticism had nothing to do with whether or not you like Fiona Apple, but rather your lack of fmiliarity with what I consider her best work.

A comeback from what? She's a one-hit wonder. I think the better question would be can she make an album that's a hit and follow that up with another.

Exactly sash, she was one hit wonder, like, even when her cd was all cute songs, Tracy Chapman, Nelly Furtado etc..Sinead O'Connor had 3 hits..cout them..Alanis had more than 1 hit and so did Jewel although not many more..like 2! so absolutely one hit wonder AND crazy as f--- and staring into the camera without blinking, give me a break! your shtick doesn't work with me, Across The Universe? why? if The Beatles is the best of the best..her version has no energy..she's a junkie! you can see that plain and simple..also Courtney Love had a record with ALL awesome songs unlike Criminal, which really only 1 song was listen-able..Morrisette's was also all good songs in her first hit record, not hit SONG..Fiona needs money and anyone with a past hit can get someone to produce a new record nowadays but i think she's toast..sorry..nuts..
