Can Bieber Fever Be Explained by Science?

Don't blame the Biebs for becoming so popular! It's not his fault; it's science. At least, that's what neuroscientist Dr. Daniel Levitin says. His research shows that the preteen obsession with Justin Bieber, as well as similar obsessions from Elvis to the Beatles (not that he's comparing) are caused by simple rushes of dopamine, the same chemical that's released when an addict gets his fix.

But there's some frightening news to go along with that. His research also suggests high dopamine levels experienced during the teen years are formative, meaning Bieber has actually been hardwired into their brains. Fortunately, kids do eventually grow out of these things, but perhaps this explains why Justin Timberlake is so popualr. Do you think science can explain Bieber Fever?

    The Bieber fans that we are talking about are young girls who are going through puberty. You're not going to see little girls (say, 8 y/o) go crazy over Bieber like these teeny-boppers are.

    Same with the Beatles, Elvis, and Sinatra.

    It's not a scientific thing. Bieber fever is something that can go away fast once there is someone better than Justin Bieber. It's just a pathetic fever that fans made up. Glad I'm not part of it, I HATE Justin Bieber.

    Hormones and being extremely impressionable isn't enough of a reason? I mean look at the faces of those girls in that picture. I don't care how good an artist someone is (and Justin isn't even that good) no one should be having that much of a fit from being 10 feet away from a person.
