Can Bieber Fever Be Explained by Science?

Don't blame the Biebs for becoming so popular! It's not his fault; it's science. At least, that's what neuroscientist Dr. Daniel Levitin says. His research shows that the preteen obsession with Justin Bieber, as well as similar obsessions from Elvis to the Beatles (not that he's comparing) are caused by simple rushes of dopamine, the same chemical that's released when an addict gets his fix.

But there's some frightening news to go along with that. His research also suggests high dopamine levels experienced during the teen years are formative, meaning Bieber has actually been hardwired into their brains. Fortunately, kids do eventually grow out of these things, but perhaps this explains why Justin Timberlake is so popualr. Do you think science can explain Bieber Fever?

Its the glands within your body. As part of puberty, the body already pumps out extra hormones to mature the body, and in seeing someone who is attractive, neurons in you head trigger the release of infatuating or love chemicals (yes, love can be described as just a bunch of chemicals) and thus, the bieber fever. Usually the body grows a tolerance to the specific compound of love chemicals tied to a specific person around four years after the first exposure, the burnout period, and the infatuation would end. However, especially during the preteen times, a person begins forming their own taste and such, especially with music, usually around the age of 14, and a psychosematic, connection with that music becomes permanent. Thus, the bieber fever continues.

Has to. There's no rational explanation as to why so many like such tasteless music.

They're rabid fans, or in other words, "fangirls". All fandoms (or in this case, people) have them, some even "fanboys". Plus since the majority of Justin's fans are pre-teen or just regular teen girls, it's also their horomones. Don't worry, once the next teen pop sensation comes out, they'll have something new to obsess, "fangirl", and fawn over. It won't last long. Fifteen minutes are already up, too.

I wish there was an 'I don't know' option because I'm in-between on this one. While science can prove many things and provide answers to the unthinkable, I don't know how likely it is that this is true. If it were true, then why are all us girls not crushing over the same band or singer? There are those beliebers who are all for him, and I'm not. My band is MCR (My Chemical Romance) other's have One Direction. I think that these obsessions with singers has more to do with you're preference in music taste and personality of the singer/band members than a chemical reaction.

The differnce on, say, band crushes, is simple. It all has to do with the personality and evironment tied with the science. If you grew up in a household of classical musicians, you would be more likely to turn to something less poppy, more of a jazz or Motown sound. or say instead, you didnt go on YouTube, where the biebs started, or managed to avoid the craze at its infancy. A lack of exposure or slow exposure would ease those love hormones in instead of piling them all on, making it easier for the body to grow a tolerence, avoiding full bieber fever and instead maybe slight or no interest in the biebs, instead opting for another band crush

So you're saying based on the environment and personality, we like the things we like. Interesting, but I'm not sure. I grew up with my dad listening to classical music and my mom listening to pop music, and I like neither. I listen to rock music and show tunes (broadway soundtracks), how does something like that happen??

Could be a case of over exposure. and at a certain point, usually around preteens, a person begins to form their own taste in music, usually independent of their parents, as a way to find and express themself. Of course, this again depends on the situation. if someone has a talent for classical, their more likely to losten to classical, even if their parents do as well, despite the formation of the taste in music bit, because its something their good at and understand easily

Could be over-exposure, and I AM an actress since I started acting when I was 5, but that still doesn't exactly explain the rock music bit, guess it's just my music tastes.

Lots of girls are bi sexual. So Bieber fits the feminine look girls like. The computer enhancement to his voice doesn't hurt either.

The women take the lead and the guys just follow along; it's all about sex. I remember all the guys being jealous of Elvis and making fun of him as the girls did their screaming and raving thing. Pretty soon, men started growing side burns, longer hair, and following like sheep.
Disco was similar. I had a few friends and a number of associates who dressed in 1960s hippie style back in the 70s. Along came the Disco craze and their attire changed overnight. Why? The girls loved Disco and the new clothing styles and you had to change along with them if you wanted to be part of the 'action'.

Existing studies have already documented that the entire "heart throb" thing is 1 part hormones, 1 part peer pressure, and 1 part chemical stimulation.

1- During puberty people experience more powerful crushes. Most girls don't openly obsess about boys at school because there's a good chance that they will encounter said boy and become embarrassed, but they will still doodle his name on their notebook. Celebrities are in the public eye, exposed to WAY more girls at once. More girls form crushes on them, and openly express them, because the likelihood of ever meeting or interacting with said celebrity is very low.
2-Group mentality- female humans are wired to identify potential mates. If all of your friends are telling you that a particular male is desirable, you're likely to agree.
3- Acting on both conformity and a biological impulse to be nutty about a dude releases feel good chemicals to encourage you to keep doing it.
