The San Francisco 49ers may be the biggest winners and losers of NFL free agency 2012 this offseason. While they signed Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham and future Hall of Famer Randy Moss at wide receiver, the franchise didn't get the quarterback upgrade it was hoping for. The good news is the Niners still play in one of the weaker NFL divisions -- the NFC West.
Quarterback Peyton Manning joined the Denver Broncos, while promising former Green Bay backup Matt Flynn has signed with the Seattle Seahawks. That being said, the Niners were able to re-sign former No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith, who was largely considered a bust until leading his team to one game shy of the Super Bowl last season.
With Manning, fans know as long as he's healthy, they'll get consistent greatness. With Flynn, as unproven as he is, he's shown more flashes of brilliance in one game more than Smith arguably showed early in his career. To be fair, the Niners finally have a stable, credible coach in Jim Harbaugh they can rally behind and Smith did rise to the occasion. A majority of last year's breakout team is also back from last season. But the big question is: Can Alex Smith do it again? Can he and the Niners make lightning strike twice and go all the way to the Super Bowl?

All their top rated defense will be returning again this year.
I'd say their chances are good.
