    i agree!

That would give us too much control over what gets beamed into our homes. Even though allowing an option like that would bring people in droves to a cable company (imagine a marketing scheme of "Roll Your Own" where you pick your own channels at reduced fees in packages of 5, 10, 15 or 20! You decide what you want and keep what you don't want out!) it makes too much sense. While we're on the subject, one of my big complaints is that cable channels were supposed to be non-commercial. You're paying extra for them so then why are they racking up all these commercial dollars? And with parental controls, why are they still chopping up movies? Not just bleeping out "offensive" words (they'll take out 'goddamn' and leave in every racial epithet known) but entire scenes. I mean, they're even chopping reruns of TV shows to cram in an extra three minutes of commercials! That isn't what I signed up for.

I meant to agree that I want to pick my own channels and having pre-selected packages shoved down our throats sucks.

What really aggravates me the most about it is having that queer channel LOGO on the package I pay for. That one is blocked at my house. That and all the sports and shopping and latino channels. I probably only watch 4 or 5 stations out of the over 200 I pay for. I never watch any of the MSM news channels because they are liberal liars who do not have any journalistic ethics. I don't subscribe to any movie channels because they seldom have anything on worth watching and they run the same ones over and over. We'd all be better off to throw those idiot boxes in the trash. The programming corrupts the minds of children and adults, too. That's why society has become so immoral, disrespectful and corrupt. Garbage in-garbage out! What we see and hear has a huge influence on us. The Bible says,"By beholding, we become changed." It's like the schools indoctrinating children, only we are being indoctrinated from our own living room.
We should be able to choose the channels we want and pay for those channels only.

Satellites of today are very different than they used to be- I know I live in S Fl and we have thunderstorms all the time. I have lost reception one time for about 10 minutes.

Obviously, we don't get to choose so they can advertise how great their channel package prices are and charge us more for the vast majority of channels we never watch. But gee, we can customize the guide to get rid of them and ain't that just a great perk?

    Right on!!
I sat with a stopwatch and timed CNN shows several times back about 10 years ago. When real programming started, I started the clock and when it ended, I stopped the clock.Even then, 50% of the time was ads and self promo ads for what's coming up next. Like Dr. Gupta - puke.

I've got quite a few old TV shows (Gunsmoke for example) from back in the 60s. They start on the hour and end at 10 minutes to the hour. Which means the commercial time has tripled since then. (Maybe even more since it's been over ten years since I did the timing.) To make it worse, they didn't show GD lawyer ads and drug ads in those days because it wasn't lawful and they should be banned again for consumer safety. It'll never happen because this country is totally run by big money and the citizens basically have the God given right to buckle up and keep their mouths shut.

See, I tolerate it because it's "progress" and "free speech." In a pig's eye. I tolerate it because I don't have a choice so all I can do is tape shows and then fast forward through the crap. Meanwhile, paying big dollars for the vast majority of stations I never watch. Oh, but I have the right to watch the tripe if I want to waste half of every hour. What a break!

I only watch TV news if it's something big like the DC sniper, 911 or a hurricane is knocking at my door because I can get more news I want on the web in 30 minutes than I can get on cable TV in 4 hours. Or more.
I love sci-fi but I wouldn't watch the Sci-Fi channel if they paid me to watch it so I end up paying Verizon to not watch it!

But I have to stop now before I get on a hot button. ;o)

That's right on with the self promotion! I can't stand when they have those word commercials hovering in the corners of the screen, usually about an upcoming show or just reminding you what channel you're on. It's frequently over something relevant. And it isn't just a quick, subliminal flash. They leave it up there a good 30 seconds or so.

Usually there's absolutely no real competition between cable companies. Yeah, satellite, cable and phone fight it out, but one company from each sector. Everyone should be allowed to compete for a share of the audience. Then you would see choices open and prices come down.

But again, that makes too much sense.

I agree100% cable was started so you could watch, and hear things not shown on regular TV,nudity, swearing, violence, raw comedy, but available only on the movie channels. Plus at about 1:00am the infomercials take over 70 to 80% of the of the cable channels

Oh yeah! I mean, Saturday and Sunday mornings there is like a solid 4hour block of infomercials everywhere! What kind of crap is this? Once upon a time there was one TV season that started on Labor Day and ran to June 30 the following year. During summer they would show reruns and then Labor Day the new season would start again. They would make about 26 episodes a season. Now, you're lucky if you get 15 because now there are about 3 or 4 seasons in the same amount of time; new episodes are only shown during "sweeps" month, when they set advertising rates, and then it's reruns. Hmm, so advertising rates are set for new episodes, but paid on reruns? It's all done backwards and the viewing public is getting it the same way!
