Broadcaster Compares Hockey To 9/11: Out of Line or His Opinion?

Comparing hockey to September 11? Wait...what?! If you find that comparison awkward and highly inappropriate, specifically during a sports broadcast, you're definitely not alone. But Canadian Broadcasting Company's sports personality Ron MacLean is. MacLean actually compared the Washington Capitals-New York Rangers NHL playoff game to 9/11 and first responders of that tragic day (i.e. firefighters, police officers, volunteers, who risked their lives in immediate aftermath).

MacLean started the Stanley Cup Game 6 playoff game coverage with the references and then proceeded to say you can't compare hockey to our worst day, which was 9/11. However, MacLean did exactly that, as his producers, cameramen, and millions of viewers most likely watched in shock and set the record for most simultaneous face palms in recent memory. He tried to backtrack his comments and said New York City and Washington, D.C. Were linked via tragedy due to both being victims of 9/11 attacks, but much like his original attempts at being clever, it was an epic fail.

“The pain these men [the Rangers and Capitals hockey players] have faced, the price they keep on paying, the hearts they keep on lifting [referring to their fans], it's been through and through, five games in,” MacLean said during Wednesday night's controversial broadcast. You can watch the whole insanity at this link here. We love sports, especially our playoff hockey, but comparing sports to real-life tragedy that still affects millions crosses the line. Hopefully, MacLean now realizes that. Too bad it's after the fact.

It's in bad taste. One should only ever compare 9/11 to pearl harbor or OK city bombings. Something that is equivalent to the suffering caused by these terrorist acts.

This is WAY out of line. People lost their lives that day, family members lost their loved ones that day. There is no way on earth that, that horrible day could ever be compared to Hockey Playoffs.

That makes me wanna hurt him. How could anyone ever compare hockey to 9/11? Thousands dont die from hockey. People dont get hijacked in the air by terrorists who want us all dead. And no one feels pain like the people that survived. The firefighters and police that had to uncover all those dead bodies.

It is more proper to compare 9-Eleven to December 7th; but we haven't run into a Commander-in-Chief who is willing to turn Mecca into a Mushroom Cloud that will glow piping-hot for the Next 75-Years . . .

The only way to compare the two, is to say that hockey can result in a need for 911.....Just a thought.....

It was a bad idea to go where he did, but anyone that watches coaches corner knows the commentators are not shy about their opinions. Don Cherry has had half the country mad at him more times than I can recall and he's still around.

Ron MacLean is one of those guys that if you take him away from his commentator role the show would suffer. As most Americans have no idea that coaches corner is a institution where Tv is concerned up here.

Taking Don Cherry away from coaches corner is like taking Bill O'Reilly away from the no spin zone, it's not going to happen.

And this insulted all (except Maclean obviously) current and former Canadians--as penalty, I suggest he be the goalie (but with no padding) in a real game against Montreal, for entire game!

(not at all a fan of Canadiens--but I do have to recognise the #1 holder of cups)

9/11 was a national tragedy. Hockey is just a sport people play for fun and for living. So far, there isn't much of a comparison.

It wasn't the smartest or the most appropriate analogy to make, but it certainly wasn't out of line. He wasn't intending to be offensive or disrespectful at all, he was just trying to make a comparative connection to hockey. Unfortunately, it didn't fit well.

Also, for anyone who doesn't watch the segment Coach's Corner which Ron MacLean hosts, he regularly pays tribute to fallen soldiers, police officers, firefighters, etc. So don't paint this man as ignorant or disrespectful, because he's certainly not.

Lighten up dudes - Being offended by everything trivializes the truly offensive. Comparisons are made to the Holocaust all the time that are factually way off base but it's simply hyperbole which never hurt a sole...

I'm guessing you've never seen any of the segments where they spend over half the coaches corner talking about fallen solders? Or the charity drives they sponsor about the families of those solders, breast cancer, and a bunch more.

It's easy to paint a bad picture if you've only seen one segment.
