Bon Jovi Says Daughter's Overdose Is a 'Tragedy': Should He Stick by Her?

Jon Bon Jovi took a dose of his own "Bad Medicine" this week when he had to speak publicly for the first time about his daughter Stephanie’s drug overdose this week. The rock star told Los Angeles’ Fox 11 TV, “This tragedy was something that I had to face too so we'll get through it.”

Stephanie, the singer’s 19-year-old daughter, was found in her Hamilton College dorm room last week after suffering a heroin overdose. The drug possession charges have since been dropped because only a very small amount of the substance was found.

Bon Jovi, who is no stranger to the illegal substance world himself, told People magazine in 2007, “I was into drugs a little too much.” He admitted to partaking, but giving them up at an early age. Still having been down the road before makes it that much harder to be critical of an experimental child. And certainly the rock and roll world has been much more tolerant of these kinds of transgressions.

But Bon Jovi has made a name for himself as a loving family man, married to his high school sweetheart for 23 years and counting. So despite what he calls his “glitzy and glamorous” lifestyle, he’s still just a dad who wants his little girl to be okay. But maybe it’s time for some tough love. What do you think? Should Bon Jovi stick by his daughter during this tough time?

Fathers don't abandon children in their time of need. "Tough love" doesn't mean you don't support the one needing help.

She's his daughter. Any father who would turn his back on his daughter is not a father. Instead, that man is merely a shell of a person, not even worth calling a man.

If someone overdoses they need help not abandonment. That's why I'm against all drug laws, because they abandon sick people who need help. If you don't support helping someone in need, I hope your child fatally overdoses and then I can see how you like it.

Support each other in times of need is what functional families do.
He might emphasize that his drug use was a bad example that she should not follow.
And I wish them the best as they face this problem together.

No question about it. Support his daughter.

However, there can come a time when a parent has to consider the well being of the rest of the family and whether or not to let the child go. I had a friend with five sons almost identical. They were all good kids but for the middle one who was a criminal from birth. By the time he was 18 she had to "let him go" because of the effect of his actions upon his siblings' lives. The home was open if he obeyed the very easy rules, but otherwise... not so much.

These kids can do amazing damage to a family and eventually after so many tries, a call must be made. It was so with a few families I have known, every case different but the end similar.

Rock and Roll needs to get rid of the Drugs part. Seems pandemic in this industry, since the fans demand nonstop adrenaline pumping concerts and tours and the musicians turn to drugs to supply the energy boost they need and to party and forget their hollow lives afterwards.
Alot of entertainment greats have fallen victim to drug abuse. Usually after yrs of drug use and then thinking that they "can handle it". michael jackson overdose elvis

Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are young, and a GOOD parent would stick by their child, just as long as she doesn't keep making the same mistake.

Put her on probation. If she re-offends, cut her off completely.
His comments that she was just experimenting are really stupid. One does not experiment with HEROIN. One experiments with Pot, Cocaine, uppers/downers. NOT heroin. That is the end of the line drug, not the beginning experimentation drug. When you get to the heroin stage, you are already lost to the world.

I'll get a lot of flack for this but here goes anyway.
Heroin is actually a pretty harmless drug. The main problem with it is that, given time, it is highly addictive. It does not actually cause any harm to the human organism. That is why it is used so widely in the medical setting as pain relief.
Regular use of uppers such as cocaine however are liable to lead to chronic, untreatable clinical depression.

From what I hear, it's very difficult to get over drug abuse without help and support, and since Bon Jovi has been through it and quit, all the more reason that he should be here for her now. He knows what she's going through and that there is a way to end that cycle.
