Bon Iver Turns Down Grammy Performance: Praiseworthy or Pretentious?

This isn't the first time Bon Iver's Justin Vernon has taken issue with an award ceremony, but now he's playing in the big leagues. Back in August, he slammed the MTV VMAs in a blog post -- wondering why parents were getting so emotional when their kid won, contemplating the "bright lights" and "diamond-encrusted Cristal bottles." Now that his band is up for four Grammys, he's apparently sticking to his guns. His band is turning down an offer to perform at the ceremony.

Vernon told Billboard, "We wanted to play our music, but were told that we couldn't play. We had to do a collaboration with someone else ... Awesome people. People that I would love to play a song with. But you know what? F---in' rock n' roll should not be decided by people that have that job ... Rock n' roll should be the f---ing people with guitars around their backs. And their friends. And their managers."

Last year, when presented with the possibility of being nominated for a Grammy, Vernon explained, "I would get up there and be like, 'This is for my parents, because they supported me,' because I know they would think it would be stupid of me not to go up there. But I kinda felt like going up there and being like: 'Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and looking at each other and pretending that this is important.' That’s what I would say." We'll just have to wait and see what happens if Bon Iver wins.

I don't even like the Grammys, but geez. It's not your show. You don't get to make the rules.

If u dont like the awards ceremony and what they stand for, then dont go, but why tell everyone else they're wrong. i would hope that hes making what he thinks is good music and i dont understand why he wouldnt want recognition for that.

The Grammys haven't been relevant for quite a while. The awards in the important categories tend to go to the current top sellers. Cool and independent music stands no chance.

I love Bon Iver. And I have my critiques about award shows in general. But I think any award show, especially a televised one who thrives on viewer ratings will have its flaws. But ultimately, its a way to honor and expose artists. If anything, I think artists like Bon Iver can help reverse whatever is negative about the award ceremony.

Also, the band was asked to do a number with another band. And he's in a fit because he wanted his band to perform alone? After admitting that the band he'd collaborate with is a good band? You didn't see Bob Dylan pulling this pretentious s*** when he sang with Mumford and Sons at last year's Grammy's. smh.

The Grammys haven't been relevant in 25 years ! Everyone who is really in the business knows this, only the casual music listener thinks it's still a show where the best of the best get their due. The American music awards are even worse.

This is just ridiculous. A Grammy performance would let the average person know who they are. I am totally unfamiliar with their music!

He's right. And every time a Grammy ceremony gets media coverage, the RIAA gets more power and influence by association.

Which proves that the grammys can expose artists who are unfamiliar to viewers. Can't be all that bad then.

Haha I didn't think you were rude. I am in a agreement and think all the clout about the Grammys can't be that bad if viewers get exposed to artists they didn't otherwise know about. As for Bon Iver (band), I'd recommend hearing the song "Blood Bank." It's one of my favorite songs. If you like indie/folk, you'd definitely like it.

Isn't it an option? Or is it "if you are offered you have to say yes?" He said "No" so it has to be pretentious? If it is pretentious to say no why are the asked? Why not just send stars a memo stating when they need to be at the award show and not make it an option. Saying no isn't pretentious, it's saying no, something all the yes-ers don't want to hear.

Personally, I and many of my friends despise all "award shows", I have laundry to fold and soot to clean from the fireplaces...Yeah, I'd rather do something tedious and boring than watch one of those shows. No thank you

Don't get me wrong, the Grammys deserve plenty of criticism, and there have been legitimate protests. But Justin Vernon complains about everything, and has no meaningful reason for it. He's trying to build an anti-establishment reputation, but he has absolutely nothing to say. He majored in women's studies, and he's not even addressing male dominance in the music industry -- something the Grammys have been specifically protested over. His "message" is image-oriented and hypocritical. He's bad milk.

I mean, Justin Vernon IS pretentious, but this act is pretty praiseworthy, even though his reasons for not wanting to perform were pretty weak, IMO.
