Bollywood Star Is the First Indian Woman to Pose for Playboy: Is It Empowering or Embarrassing?

While most people probably picture the classic Playboy Bunny as a buxom blonde beauty, Sherlyn Chopra is about to shatter that image. The Bollywood actress will grace the cover of the November issue of the girlie magazine and pose nude for an inside spread. But many people in her native India are outraged by her revealing debut.

Sherlyn Chopra

In a report for the Daily Mail, commentator Gayatri Sankar spoke to why he feels Chopra’s decision is inappropriate given the current state of women’s affairs in India. He remarked, “At a time when innocent women across the nation from Gujarat to Guwahati have been subjected to sexual abuse and humiliation, one wonders if Sherlyn Chopra’s pictures wound a woman’s integrity.” But an argument could be made that her choice is empowering. After all, the 28-year-old, who’s had only minor roles in Bollywood films, landed the Playboy shoot all on her own. She wrote a letter to the magazine’s staff and proposed the idea herself.

Of course, people in India won’t be able to swing by their local newsstand and pick up a copy. The mag is banned there, but it is available online. One person who isn’t up in arms about Chopra’s decision is her mother — but that’s just because the actress hasn’t let her mom know about the Playboy issue yet. According to a BBC Hindi interview, Chopra plans to visit and break the news face-to-face. What do you think: Is Chorpha’s decision lacking integrity?

I don't see anything empowering about posing nude for a guy's masturbation magazine.
What's next? National Self-Help and Most Improved awards for women who find jobs at Elegant Angel Entertainment, doing porn scenes with 3 men and handcuffs?

No God originally had Adam and Eve nude it was not until te partook for the tree of knowledge of good and bad that they realized they were naked... Man decided for themselves that nudity was bad God was loving enough to provide clothes for Adam and Eve though...

I wonder why no one ever says the same stuff about guys who pose nude for Playgirl, or are male strippers or whatever, No one ever seems to think that they are degrading all men, or that it is bad for men, or that they are sluts or whatever. There's nothing wrong with a naked human body and it's perfectly natural to appreciate a beautiful one of such. There's also nothing wrong with masturbation and if guys (and some girls) masturbate to her pictures she can take that as a compliment, because it is.

There's a lot of body shame in our culture and even more so in India. I imagine it must feel very empowering for her to overcome her cultural biases and show she's not buying into the shame and is proud of how she looks without needing to cover it up with clothes.

I find that it would be upsetting for any woman to pose for magazines such as Playboy. She is a very pretty woman and I'm sure she could do so much better than making the likes of Hugh Hefner richer.

I can see how the commentator could find this wounding to women's affairs. In a country where women are treated like second, maybe even third class citizens, she COULD be using this platform that she has created for herself to EMPOWER the women of her country.

And that's my rant for the day. Go ahead, attack me and call me a Feminazi. I'm ready for you ;).

Uh, this was HER choice and it usually makes the woman both rich and incredibly famous. They get acting jobs, great connections and a LOT of work out of these photo shoots.

She is OWNING herself and NOT allowing her Indian upbringing (women are property in India) to infringe on her self empowerment. Don't blame Hugh for creating wealthy goddesses.

Empowerment means being able to make the choice to do whatever you want with your own body. If Playboy is going to exist regardless it's certainly nice to see more women of colour included. I'm a little weirded out by how white she is in the photo shown, though -- is that her natural skin tone or was she whitewashed? If so I have to say I'm disappointed. That's like taking one step forward and two steps back.

Well I wouldn't say one Indian person is a guide to how to recognize all Indian people? That's kind of like having one German friend and then expecting all German people to look like them.

I don't know if she's mixed ethnicity but either way I'm much more concerned about her skin tone in the photo. It's... white, which is not BAD of course for someone of colour to have if that is her regular skin tone, but for a move that's trying to create more acceptance of people who aren't white it looks rather two-faced.

There's nothing embarrassing about a nude human body. If done artistically even a less than perfect body would look good. Playboy is not exactly a salacious magazine.

She is from a country that treats women as property. She is from a country where daddy's can kill their daughters for daring to "dishonor" the family by refusing an arranged marriage or talking with a boy.

So, this is empowering, because it shows SHE is standing for herself, doing what SHE decides and not what a man decided for her. THIS is a huge deal, her being from India (very conservative) and her showing herself in that way.

    Bravo to her.

As sociology student who has studied India and Hinduism extensively, and someone who has many female friends living there, I have to ask that you not perpetuate the idea that Indian women are helplessly oppressed by men. It is true that it is still a very sexist country in many ways, and that plenty of women (ESPECIALLY those in lower castes) ARE oppressed and treated as property, but to make a sweeping generalization and say that the entire country is like that is absolutely false and does a surprising amount of harm rather than the good you're intending it to. Please consider that.

The predominance of them ARE still hopelessly oppressed and treated as pawns on the chess board of men.
