Bollywood Star Is the First Indian Woman to Pose for Playboy: Is It Empowering or Embarrassing?

While most people probably picture the classic Playboy Bunny as a buxom blonde beauty, Sherlyn Chopra is about to shatter that image. The Bollywood actress will grace the cover of the November issue of the girlie magazine and pose nude for an inside spread. But many people in her native India are outraged by her revealing debut.

Sherlyn Chopra

In a report for the Daily Mail, commentator Gayatri Sankar spoke to why he feels Chopra’s decision is inappropriate given the current state of women’s affairs in India. He remarked, “At a time when innocent women across the nation from Gujarat to Guwahati have been subjected to sexual abuse and humiliation, one wonders if Sherlyn Chopra’s pictures wound a woman’s integrity.” But an argument could be made that her choice is empowering. After all, the 28-year-old, who’s had only minor roles in Bollywood films, landed the Playboy shoot all on her own. She wrote a letter to the magazine’s staff and proposed the idea herself.

Of course, people in India won’t be able to swing by their local newsstand and pick up a copy. The mag is banned there, but it is available online. One person who isn’t up in arms about Chopra’s decision is her mother — but that’s just because the actress hasn’t let her mom know about the Playboy issue yet. According to a BBC Hindi interview, Chopra plans to visit and break the news face-to-face. What do you think: Is Chorpha’s decision lacking integrity?

I don't see anything empowering about posing nude for a guy's masturbation magazine.
What's next? National Self-Help and Most Improved awards for women who find jobs at Elegant Angel Entertainment, doing porn scenes with 3 men and handcuffs?

I don't think ANY woman should take off her clothes in public. It is degrading.I don't care if she is Indian, American, Cuban,or whatever.
No wonder she didn't tell her Mother !! As a Mother/Grandmother.I would kill them verbally & tell them that she/they and humiliating and showed NO class if they did that. I would say how upset & disappointed I am.
Of course, I'm certain the pay will be obscenely high. Her future husband will be embarrassed as well if is wants to wed.

I say embarrassing, because to me it seems like she is disrespecting the women of her country. However, I also say empowering, because she got this job by herself which I think is quite amazing.

I just read a post on this site about men seeing women as objects. Centuries ago it was forced on lower class women. Now...All classes of women embrace being a slutty object. Playboy=Legal form of prostitution.

Some societies seem the think they have a lock on what the women in their societies can or must do like marrying the girls off, to someone their don't even know; that their parents arranged; at 12 or 14 to have them barefoot and pregnant before their bodies are full developed. For them its alright for a child of 14 to put on a explicit sex show for a man of 40, but not think on her own or choose her own direction in life. Outrage is a little hypocritical! Ladies of the Taliban? Iran? Mars?

At over twice Sherlyn's age, I will not likely see her "exposure", but know she will be more appealing at 28 than 82. Such displays have earned many, roles in movies, like Marilyn Monroe who made many memorable, well acted appearances without shedding any other article of clothing. Some will never forget or forgive, but if movies Bollywood, Hollywood, or Roger Corman like movies is her choice, she should go for it. It is her own convictions that matter!

I'm not saying this because she is posing nude. She is Showing herself but that is Her choice. In India they believe women are 2nd class citizens. They should only do what men tell them to do. What's wrong with being different although this is extreme.

Every time we call for help with the computer, we get an Indian trying to talk to us. The accent is heavy we usually have to ask to speak to an American.

"Empowering" is the wrong word; being naked in public doesn't make you powerful.

But I'm in favor of the shoot.

Considering the situation of women in India, it is somewhat empowering. I'd say go for it if she wants to. I never understood why when a girl wants to be a model, a bunch of ugly bitches have to jump and say it's degrading (and also, blame it all on men, why not).

Now, while I was joking on the ugly bitches part (not necessarily have to be ugly), just let the girl do whatever she wants. I don't hear any complaining when some man models for Calvin Klein. Oh, the hypocrisy.

It's not quite the same for a man to be topless as a woman. Males don't have secondary sexual characteristics that are considered obscene or inappropriate for the general masses. The Calvin Klein ads also aren't meant to be wanking material.

there are many male strippers on the market, on parties etc.... Calvin Klein was just an example of males posing on a seductive/attractive manner.
Anyway, those attacking her for something she chooses to do, are only diminishing her rights. It's like those feminists pushing women to work because "staying at home is degrading". It's her choice, respect it. It's her own life not yours.

Look at Steven Spielberg's reaction to Drew Barrymore's Playboy spread, he had a graphic artist go through it and photoshop clothes on her and reprinted the cover to read "Cover Up." The same should be done for every woman. God gave Adam and Eve clothes for a reason, had He not, we'd all be nudists and it wouldn't matter anyway.
