Thursday would have been Whitney Houston's 49th birthday, and her adoring daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown paid tribute by getting a tattoo on her wrist of her mom's initials surrounded by doves. Close family friend Nick Gordon also got the same ink in Whitney's memory.

Earlier on Wednesday, Brown tweeted: "On the way with MYbooboo @nickgordon :)heading2 #Inksomnia for our TATTSSS !this is for you mommy (: we love you, happybirthday Ourlady XXo." Brown later posted an Instagram picture of the tattoos.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Paris Jackson is hoping to follow in Bobbi Kristina's footsteps, tweeting on Tuesday: "I kinda want to get August XXIX tatted on my back" (which is her father, Michael Jackson's birthday). She added, "lol y'all are trippin trying to tell me not to get the tat, when u guys don't even know what it means … it's my dads bday get over it lmao." What do you think? Are tribute tattoos a nice way to remember loved ones?

I would prefer not to be remembered in the form of a tattoo, nor a shirt, neither a social media page. My mind can remember those who were close to me enough that I do not need a permanent image on my body.

Well, yes and no. But I would think a better way to remember someone so dear would be to live the best life you can ( off drugs and other unhealthy dependencies, and substances,), giving back and honoring her mother by living a productive life. And, I think she may be on track with that?

If you have to have a tat to remember someone then you have one hell of a screwed up memory.
Tats are for thugs and hookers or people that don't give a tinkers darn about their bodies.
I have a tat in fact I have 4 WORST MISTAKE I EVER MADE.
Yes tats are good if you are killed and they cant find an ID but PEOPLE YOU BETTER BE WALKING THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE....commit a crime and guess what the only thing they will remember? Not the looks or the clothes but that tat if they see it.
Next thing you know the long arm of the law is busting your door down and you have suddenly become a guest of the city you live in with your own personal ID other then your tats.

Tattoos are SO stupid and ugly anyway. Why would you need a permanent marking on your body to remind you of someone you love? Are you afraid you'll forget them?!! Tattoos will go away as a fad the same as mullets and leisure suits. Why permanently mark yourself as a fad fool?

Considering that tattoos have been a 'fad' as you wrote, for literally THOUSANDS of years, i feel safe in predicting that it will be a very long time before tattoos become unpopular. Regarding the beauty of a tattoo, beauty is a very subjective thing - the beauty of a tattoo literally only matters to the one wearing it. Writing for mai self, i have 37 stars of different sizes, starting at the base of mai neck, flowing down mai back and ending on mai leg. Each star has a personal meaning, and together the number 37 has a spiritual significance for me. Most people who notice them peeking out from the back of mai blouse collar or on mai calf when i wear a skirt, have nice things to say about them, and questions.. mai tattoos have never caused any trouble for me in any aspect of mai life. Except i guess it must be awfully upsetting to people such as you? But then i do not live for you.

Apart from general novelty, fads may be driven by mass media programming, emotional excitement, peer pressure, or the desire of 'being hip'. Yes, tattoos certainly fit that profile!

I don't expect you to live for me and I certainly don't live for you.

Tattoos are ugly and have no meaning to me. Plus, they get uglier the older you get. BTW - I don't like pink flamingos or concrete geese either.

There is a lot of permanence in a tattoo, unless you intend to spend a lot of money and pain on laser removal. While some people who are too young or too drunk to make long term decisions some times do get tattoos, most of us who get them see them as a commitment. i would not expect any one else to understand a personal commitment, especially if they were into labeling other people based on a tattoo.

One daughter of mine has several tattoos. She knows how I feel about them. I still love her, that can't change.

Personally, I'm generally a forgetful person, but if something is important to me, it's in my mind.

I can't see making myself a walking artistic billboard of a conversation piece.

By people getting tattoos they open themselves up to profiling. People with tattoos on their face, neck, hands, fingers are perceived as being lower class with a lower IQ. Women with tattoos on their lower backs are considered tramps (tramp stamp). By permanently marking your body you take a risk that this will be an embarrassment later.

until age 16 i grew up in Sapporo, where men and women with too many tattoos were not allowed in public onsen, as they made people uncomfortable.. too many tattoos are commonly associated with the Yakuza, who cover their body with irezumi tattoos. There is a limit to social acceptance of art in every aspect of life and so it is left to the individual person to decide how they feel about tattoos.

i think that mai choice of only stars is innocent enough.. and that some imagery is certainly intended to create a fear or hate response in those who see them - again it is an individual situation.

If i were covered with 37 swastika instead of tiny flowing stars.. the perception of me would be very different i think ja ne?

Tattoos are often a form of memorial or honor of some person, some event of some thing deeply meaningful to the person wearing the tattoo. i do not really think they need it to remember.. it is more of a focus for emotional focus

Many people need a head stone to honor a dead person.. they may also insist on placing the dead body in an air-tight coffin and burying it in the ground.. this is not really done for the dead person.. they do not need it. It is done for the living who wish to be reminded of the dead person.

So memorial tattoos are really very much the same i think.

Haha...I'm a fan of cremation too! Drop me off at the nearest landfill! If tattoos of people are visible applying for a decent office\professional job, their chances of getting the job will be diminished.

Your stars aren't that big of a deal where they're located. I understand how you like its meaning and art. But again, some people like plastic pink flamingos in their front yards...I think they're ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I heard a comedian on America's Got Talent who talked about a girl's cute butterfly on the bottom of her lower back. He said, "When she gets old, it will look like a moth hit a windshield!" It got a lot of laughs and he made it into the finals this week.

    It's been a nice chat. ;)

Even the most beautiful tattoo fades and loses its lustre and detail. Eventually, fairest looking face tattooed on the body will add its own wrinkles and sags. Eventually the tattoo will have the appearance of a wrinkled 20 something to honor Whitney's prime and that to me is even sadder!

Everyone has their way of honoring people.

I have a tattoo of a sea turtle for my daughter's birth. I am getting one of a giraffe for my son's birth. I also have 2 birds and some flowers on my back as a representation of my faith (the main flower has the kanji for faith in the middle of it). I would love to get something for my wedding date and also in memory of those I've lost that mean so much to me, just haven't figured out what yet.

I'm not forcing anyone else to get a tattoo, nor do I force them to look at mine. It is a personl choice.

Tattoos might be a good way to remember the Holocaust or indicate the brainlessness of the wearer. Sickos are the only ones to git tattoos. dumb

How am I a sicko? I have tattoos and no one has ever made mention how "wrong" or "horrible" they are. In any case, there is only one that can be seen, and even that can be covered by pants. I have at least one more to get too. A wonderfully cute giraffe for my son in honor of his birth (I have a sea turtle for my daughter and 2 birds and flowers on my back as a dipiction and representation of what I believe, even the pastors at the church I attend think it's a pretty cool way to represent my faith.)

As long as they are done so in good taste, tribute tattoos can be a very meaningful and
sincere way to commemorate someone. Especially a loved one or a close friend. Nude
images can be especially meaningful as long as they a are done with proper regards to
good taste, and are not flaunted or otherwise readily visable to the general public. By
not readily visable, I mean a person might be displaying his/her tat in full view while attired
in swimwear or nude, but the tattoo would be only minimally visable when wearing a pair
of short shorts and a top. That would still leave pretty good size area on the chest, back,
and shoulders for a tattooist's palate. Also, I belive that both Bobbie Christina and Paris
should both wait until they are at least sixteen before induldging in any kind of permanate
tattooing. Be they commemorative, or otherwise.

People have there own way of keeping their loved ones near them. Nowadays you can mix a little bit of the ashes of your cremated loved one in the ink and have them tattooed directly into your skin. They are literally part of you forever.
