From
Lady Gaga to
Occupy Wall Street, "
The Simpsons" to "
Harry Potter," the subjects of college courses are getting more and more interesting these days. Kevin Allred, a Ph.D student and lecturer at Rutgers University’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, will be teaching a course titled “Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyoncé.”
“This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend,” said Allred.
Instead, the class will use Beyoncé’s music, videos, and career to explore issues of race, gender, and sexual politics. Some subtopics they will discuss include “the extent of Beyoncé’s control over her own aesthetic, whether her often half-naked body is empowered or stereotypical, and her more racy performances as her alter ego, ‘Sasha Fierce.’” The students will also be assigned readings from black feminists such as Alice Walker, Sojourner Truth, and bell hooks.
While Allred is certainly not the first to structure a course around a celebrity (Georgetown University offers a course on Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z), he has met his fair share of criticism. Some question the
intellectual relevance of studying pop stars. Others feel that Beyoncé doesn’t deserve to be compared to the likes of Walker and hooks.
What do you think about making Beyoncé the subject of a
college course? Is it awesome or awful?
Don't waste your time (or money) on crap like this.... Spend a few bucks on the latest version of People Magazine and you can learn all that you need to know for a lot less..
what shes done is no different to any other artist out their....so i dont get the point..
Can you spell USELESS DEGREE - I am just so sure there are job opportunities for these graduates -----------------------------... in the ranks of the Occupy (your parents basement for life) Movement
Of course I would love to take on a Beyoncé class as long as it had long labs and was hands on with Beyoncé herself. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Yes, some kids with brains (like my daughter) take majors that will provide them with marketable skills to help them land a good job. But you are correct, It won't give them or guaranty them a job. College only guaranteed them an education in the areas they picked. They'll still have to, in most cases, search for a job, work hard at landing a job, and probably be turned down more then hired. But if they are motivated and determined (not entitlement minded little pissers-and moaners), they will get there.
But, then there are the idiots that fill their college years with art history, fine arts, human sexuality, feminist studies, "Occupy Wall Street" studies, and other lefty clap-trap. Then they'll piss and moan when they get out of school because someone doesn't see they have a useless degree and just hand them a great paying job. Then they'll go to the nearest lefty protest and piss and moan that they shouldn't have to pay back their loans because they were stupid and thought college was just suppose to be some mind-opening, drug-addled, hippy experience that would m...

Alos, it's fine if they want to take some personal interest classes on the side for their own enjoyment (and Pay for it all themselves), but they can't expect it to effect their ease in finding a job or their future income level.
