Beyonce and Jay-Z Want to Trademark Daughter's Name: Smart or Silly?

Perhaps prompted by reports of a popular marijuana strain named after their daughter, Beyonce and Jay-Z have filed to patent the name of their first child, Blue Ivy. According to The Washington Post, they not only want to protect the name from being used to someone else's profit, but also to secure it for entrepreneurial use, should they decide to use it "for a future line of baby carriages, baby cosmetics, [and] diaper bags."

A few people have already tried to patent the name -- last month, a fashion designer filed for "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" and a fragrance line filed for "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" -- but both requests were denied because the name clearly belong to "a very famous infant." However, a Wisconsin boutique filed for "Blue Ivy" more than a year ago, and they will be keeping their trademark as it received approval before the child's name was even announced -- unless, as The Washington Post notes, they feel like selling it. Do you think Beyonce and Jay-Z's plan to trademark Blue Ivy's name is smart -- or downright silly?

At this point it makes me think that they're not only exploiting their kid but they've used her as a marketing strategy. Honestly I didn't like their latest albums and I guess they just needed something to get them back in the spotlight.

But here's the good news! I've found their logo

even if other people do use that name who the fukk cares. As long as they don't have her social or anything like that her identity is SAFE. Trademarking a name means it's for business and this tells me, their daughter is a business for them.

exactly, i see this nothing more as them securing her name in now for future marketing use. its a shame.

It's smart AND silly. It's honestly pretty ridiculous that they'd have to worry about people using their kids name for things, and it's kind of sad that all they can think about it baby makeup. At the same time it makes sense to block people from potentially using name recognition to market- if you hear about Apple Paltrow shampoo, you assume it has something to do with Apple Paltrow.

With that name I find their act to be one of thoughtfulness. Some jackass just may do that and use it commercially just to use that kids coattails or to twist the parents into paying a ton of $$$$ to get the rights back. I think it would be great if Beyonce comes out with a line of child safe perfume and cologne. hey, babies can make some serious stinks !! I know as I have 3 kids and 9 Gkids and let me tell ya, kids can outstink Dad something serious !!!!!

It's a smart move. Especially since other people were attempting to do it for profit and business purposes. They didn't get where they are by being stupid.
I guess I should have trademarked my kid's name too. Nah, maybe not. She might have turned out like that douche bag Lindsey Lohan.

I think it's more likely that they're doing this to prevent others from profiting from their daughter's name, which shows a lot of foresight.

TT? Hmmm, had your TT been trademarked maybe Audi would owe you for usage. And can you imagine the money "Trojan" would owe you? C'mon, If 'Tom Trojan' is your real name, I know the porn industry if flipping over a name like yours. It's so cool. BTW, it's not a silly name, yours or their kid's name.

I wouldn't use the word silly for one thing, but that's me!! I think they want to make money off their kid, because they know that their music career SUCKS and it's coming to an end!! So they are going to milk it from this kid, they are not responsible people, because they would keep the child out of the media. That's why so many celebrities keep their kids out of the media until they are ready, not these two idiots!!

This woman's a legend in her own mind! It's a ridiculous name, and her self-important attitude has worn thin. I was done with her when she and her entourage treated the other new parents in the hospital so shabbily. She needs to get over herself.

Sound like you hatin' on her; don't do that it shows your weakness. One need not glorify this woman or put her down, just remain neutral to her situation; because nothing we say will make a difference, it is what it is. Don't get bent out in your mind over somene you don't know personally' its not healthy for you.
